We often settle abroad or in other cities for better prospects in jobs and lifestyle. But in this process, our beloved aging parents or other senior members of our family are left alone and they often feel depressed and lonely. Also; an emergency can crop up anytime in life. They may become seriously ill and need immediate hospitalization in the middle of the night or may have broken a leg that needs immediate surgery. We feel helpless and very much worried if any such situation happens with our parents or other seniors because we can’t come running from abroad or other cities. So, if we can arrange a living space for our elders where they can live comfortably and peacefully and are well taken care of then we can also feel relaxed.

There are special apartments for elders known as senior living homes where our elders can reside comfortably and safely. Elder Care Services in Kolkata can recommend some good Senior Living Homes for elderly people from which you can choose to make your seniors happy, comfortable, and safe. But before choosing the Senior living homes we must focus on if the senior living home is safe and is well prepared to handle all types of emergencies including natural disasters.

  • The benefit of living in a senior apartment is that they have professional caregivers who help seniors with their daily activities like bathing, dressing, medications and they also accompany the elderly people to doctor’s appointments and many more. But, to make our seniors completely comfortable and safe we need to ensure that the apartment which we are considering for our beloved seniors must have some on-site medical services to respond to emergencies. Additionally, they must have spare oxygen cylinders, extra medical supplies, equipment, and at least a 7 day supply of everything necessary. Also, the senior home must have distress call buttons installed in the room of every senior to notify the staff if they are suddenly feeling ill or have suffered a serious injury and first aid kits. Also, if the senior home facility has reserved dry foods and other essential items for emergencies.

  • Power cuts are a common phenomenon, especially during bad weather, and our beloved seniors may fall and injure themselves due to poor visibility during a power cut so the senior home must have emergency backup power systems or generators to provide power during load shedding.

  • Trips and falls are common when people ages and sometimes they may prove fatal. So, we must choose a senior home that is perfectly designed keeping in mind the safety of the senior people. The apartment must have ramps, hallway hand railings, raised toilets, grab bars in bathrooms to reduce the risk of falls and trips. Additionally, if it is a multi-story building it should have elevators to make it easy for elderly people to move.

  • Senior people are often prone to falling for scams and theft. We have to ensure that the senior apartment we are choosing for them has a very well-developed alarming system and well-trained security services to give our seniors a peaceful and secured life. Also, the senior apartment must have fire alarms installed to detect fires and smoke so that they can take prompt actions if any fire-related emergencies crop up. Last but not least, we should also ensure that the senior home where our beloved elder will reside must have a dedicated disaster management team of their own who are very well prepared for evacuating seniors to safety if needed during any natural disaster like earthquakes, floods, or other emergencies like fire.

These are some of the important points you should focus on while choosing senior home facilities for your beloved seniors so that they can live comfortably and safely.
