Engine rocker arms are perhaps not very well-known, but important parts of some internal combustion engines. Their wear and tear can lead to a decrease in engine power and even to Rocker arms falling off, so it is important to know what signs indicate the need to replace rocker arms.

Reasons are;

If the rocker arm breaks in the engine, characteristic symptoms may appear. Of course, their cause may be other factors, however, regardless of the source; the car cannot be operated until the problem is eliminated.

  1. Clicks or ticks. In case of malfunctions in the valve mechanism, extraneous sounds appear - clicks or ticking, reminiscent of the work of a sewing machine. In this case, it is necessary to check the condition of the rocker arms of the engines like Ram 3.7 and their surrounding parts on the running engine. Faulty rocker arms may jam or not fully open/close valves. There are many other reasons for the appearance of extraneous sounds during engine operation - for example, lack of lubrication, deformation of valves, and wear of camshaft cams. If during the visual inspection of the rocker arm there are no defects, then it is better to entrust further diagnosis to a qualified mechanic.
  2. Reducing power or stopping the engine. Strict observance of valve timing is very important to ensure the efficient operation of the engine. Valves must be opened and closed at the right time. If the rocker arm falls out of this process due to a malfunction, the engine power is reduced. In some cases, the deviation from the set phases can be so significant that the engine stalls. In the future, it will be impossible to start it until the faulty parts are replaced.
  3. Check Engine indicator lamp lights on fire. The engine control unit also records the decrease in power and informs the driver about it via the Check Engine. Its appearance on the instrument panel should not be ignored. To read the trouble codes, you will need a diagnostic scanner. Some examples of codes related to rocker arm failures are P2646 (rocker arm actuator thrust A jammed at position 1), P2647 (signal from rocker oil pressure sensor) and P2662 (rocker arm actuator thrust B jammed in position 2).
  4. Physical wear and tear. An external inspection of the rocker arm in vehicles like Jeep 3.7 may reveal signs of wear or damage. After removing the valve cover, check if there are any traces of wear in the form of metal chips near the rocker arm. It can cause damage to the axis of the rocker arm or valves.

Damaged or worn rocker arms must be replaced, even if at the moment none of the symptoms described above appear, since soon they will declare themselves.
