Things to Keep in Mind While Installing Ultrasonic Water Level Sensors

Ultrasonic water level sensors measure the levels of any media, liquid or solid, using high-frequency ultrasonic waves. This sensor/transmitter is directed downward and positioned on the top of a tank. It sends out waves and measures how long it takes for the sensor to get the return signal from the ocean. After that, the measured duration is utilised to generate a level of an exact voltage ranging from 0 to 10 volts.

Advantages

-Installation and operation are simple.

-There are no moving parts.

-Measuring without touching

-Water level monitoring on a continuous basis

-Some non-liquid materials/media can be used.

-Liquids and certain solids are OK.

-High sensitivity and accuracy

Disadvantages

-Water turbulence has the potential to produce transient inaccuracies in measurements (not common)

cost a bit more than other types of sensors (more circuitry involved, high-frequency transducer, etc.)

-Long-range sensing of levels may be problematic (most applications require only a short-range)

-Materials or tanks that might obstruct the sensor's received echo are not recommended (odd-shaped tanks, divider plates can throw off the signal, etc.)

Things to Remember While Choosing an Ultrasonic Tank Level Sensor

When installing your sensor in a tank, these are critical considerations.

  1. Obstruction avoidance - Readings will be skewed if the tank's wall or other impediments are present.
  2. Our filtering algorithm allows the sensor to prioritise large targets over tiny targets and noise, which can alter readings. This is advantageous in tank level monitoring applications since the liquid level produces the most acoustic return.
  3. Be wary of the fill stream - The fill stream might be an obstructive factor in your application that you may not have considered at first.

F-option & P-option for Sensors

a) F-option: adds additional water/particulate protection.

b) P-option: It is a parylene coating that is placed on the aluminium transducer surface to provide further corrosion resistance.

For example, if you're monitoring water levels in a tank and the water contains high quantities of chlorine or other pollutants, the aluminium may be harmed. It can generate a corrosive atmosphere depending on the chlorine levels and tank temperature. To assist prevent corrosion on the aluminium transducer, we recommend ordering the F-option and P-option with the sensor. Customers should double-check that the exposed materials on our sensors can endure the situations in which they will be used.

How to Measure Oil in a Sealed Tank

When installing an ultrasonic sensor in a sealed oil tank, keep the following in mind:

  1. Is it possible that frost or condensation may accumulate on the sensor?
  2. What are your operation's minimum and maximum range requirements?
  3. What is the read/refresh rate that you want for your application?
  4. Is there a sensor resolution that you prefer? Our sensors provide distance measurements in inches, centimetres, and millimetres.
  5. Is there a sensor output that you prefer? What voltage level do you want to run the sensor at? (RS232, TTL, I2C, Pulse-Width, Analog Voltage, Analog Envelope)

How to Pick the Best Sensor for your Tank Level Monitor Application

  1. The tank's measurements are what you'll be measuring.
  2. Is the tank corrugated or smooth on the inside?
  3. What is the bare minimum for your application?
  4. What is the purpose of the tank? Are you looking for oil and gas, water, bulk storage, chemical storage, or anything else?
  5. How rapidly will the tank's liquid level fluctuate over time?
