Italian Coast Guard Rescued 573 migrants near Sardinia

Authorities in Italy have announced that Italian Authorities have confirmed that 573 people who tried to make it to Europe were rescued close to Sardinia's coastline.

In the overall number of people taken in were the 59 minors who were not accompanied, Theactualizar reports.

As per a press statement issued from the Coast Guard of Italy on Tuesday February 22, rescuers were in two overloaded fishing boats, and "left to the whims of the waves, in the midst of adverse weather conditions".

Authorities explained that rescue efforts took place near the southern part of Sardinia following an alert.

"The operation to rescue were conducted 70 miles away from Capo Spartivento, in Italian SAR waters, which are distinguished in this stretch of sea by vast distances from the coast, under direct Italian oversight," the statement of the Italian Coast Guard reads.

It has been reported that when the migrants were saved they were brought to the Diciotti hospital, which was where they sought medical attention.

The person who was saved was a dead person. The migrants informed authorities that the person was dead for several days which suggests that the migrants were stuck in the sea for several days, without help.

"The refugees were rescued by Coast Guard patrol boats, and later transferred onto the Diciotti ship, which had CISOM medical personnel aboard and, among them, a deceased person was also found and, according to the declarations made from the people who were rescued, passed away a few days earlier," the Coast Guard added.
