Schools across India have been shut since the Covid-19 pandemic first hit us back in 2020. Even though governments are keen on re-opening educational institutions and following "old" routines, schools feel otherwise.

The discovery of virtual teaching during lockdown was a godsend to schools, allowing them to carry on education for high school online. However, they had to traverse a long journey to reach this understanding and adopt the benefits of online education. Online education in India started on a bumpy note, inviting scepticism from schools, teachers and students. Due to the absence of any precedent, many questioned the effectiveness of studying online as compared to studying at a school physically. But, the possibility of physical attendance looked bleak and children’s futures were at stake. So, everyone slowly began embracing this ‘tech-savvy’ mode of learning to prevent loss of time and productivity.

Fundamentally, online education requires 2 basic tools to operate - a smartphone/laptop and a strong internet connection. Virtual platforms began mimicking "classrooms" as teachers and students learnt to interact virtually through the screen. Surprisingly, things became simpler. A single click of the button and lo and behold. High school students now attend classes and learn all the lessons in a live video format.

Online education expands the walls of a ‘classroom’ and makes routine flexible. It works by allowing students to choose from unlimited topics to learn about from the comfort of their homes. Learning at their own pace, high school students can juggle multiple academic and extracurricular activities smoothly. Families are saving costs on travel and stay making online education even more lucrative.

Still, in its infancy, online education harbours a massive untapped potential to revolutionise education for high school. India’s New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 lends prominence to online education and stresses the importance of virtual learning to achieve a GER target of 50% by 2035. With such radical changes in the traditional brick-and-mortar education ecosystem, schools must work harder than ever to accommodate online teaching in their realm for better accessibility and teaching to all.

Among the many prominent schools in India, Ryan Group of School has performed a wonderful job of smoothly transitioning into the online sector for education. Instead of adopting a patchwork solution, Ryan has specifically developed their Ryan Learning Management System(LMS) for high school to ensure continuity into quality education. It provides over lakh content resources, interactive presentations, quizzes and test papers in one place making it easy for high school students to learn and their teachers to assess their papers.

Ryan’s initiative is just the beginning of many future advancements to perfect the online education system. Other Indian schools can take inspiration from such programs and devise their own to benefit students across the country. The future is online education, pandemic or no pandemic.
