5 Tips for Reducing Carpet Stains
Posted: Mar 11, 2022
How many times have you walked into your living room and sighed because of the stain that’s developed on your carpet? And while you could call in the professionals, they don’t come cheap, nor do they know your carpet like you do. Save yourself some money and some hassle by following these five tips for reducing carpet stains at home. You may not be able to avoid them altogether, but you can at least cut down on their number and severity to save time and money with professional cleaning in the future.
Reduce Spills- Any professional carpet cleaner will tell you that spills are one of their most common (and difficult) stains to remove. Luckily, there are several ways to minimize or avoid spilling foods and drinks on your carpet. First, wipe up liquids as soon as they happen. Next, it’s good to have an absorbent towel or two near your dining table—this way, if someone accidentally spills something, they can simply use a clean towel and won’t need to move furniture or scrub unnecessarily. Last but not least: Use placemats! That way, any spillage ends up on a piece of fabric instead of directly on your carpet.
Protect Your Carpets- While it’s not advisable to skip regular carpet cleaning services, there are some things you can do to help your carpet stay cleaner longer. Here are a few tips to try: Vacuum at least once per week. Frequent vacuuming helps prevent dirt from settling into your carpet fibers and reduces traffic patterns so that stains have less of a chance of setting in. Avoid walking on wet carpets. Wet carpets attract more dirt and more stains, so take care when stepping out of pools or taking off shoes outside. Don’t let kids play on sand or grass before coming inside; as they walk across carpet, they may transfer small amounts of wet grime onto your floors if you don’t insist on changing their shoes first.
Use Proper Cleaning Products- Many common household products can cause carpet stains and watermarks. Be sure to keep your cleaning materials in a separate area, away from children and pets, so they don’t accidentally ingest or inhale harmful chemicals. We recommend using specially formulated carpet cleaners, which are specifically designed to remove stains without staining themselves. It’s also important to know how different carpet fibers react to certain chemicals—so make sure you read labels carefully before using a cleaner on your carpets.
Vacuum Regularly- The single most important factor in carpet care is regular vacuuming. Keep your carpets clean by scheduling regular vacuuming to prevent dirt and stains from building up over time.
Don’t Let the Stain Set- The longer a stain sits, or sets, on your carpeting, rugs, or upholstery before you start to treat it—the harder it will be to remove. Even though stains will seem like they’re dried into your carpet after a few hours, there’s still hope. The key is to act quickly and to begin treating it as soon as possible. But make sure that you clean any excess liquids up right away with a dry towel so that they don’t have time to set. (The same goes for spills on hardwood floors.) This can help prevent stains from setting in deeper while allowing you more time to tackle them before they get permanent.
