Are Metaverse Weddings, The Next Big Thing in The Wedding Space? India's First Metaverse Marriage
Posted: Mar 22, 2022
A few days ago, I got a message about India’s first metaverse wedding. I'm going to share what I think will be the next big thing. The world has moved to the virtual space for social gatherings of all kinds, be it a conference or a music fest.So what about weddings? Can we get married in the metaverse?According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, "metaverse" is defined as "a virtual world similar to the real world but created by software".
The answer is yes. The times are changing and India's first metaverse marriage took place recently on June 7, 2020.
What Is A Metaverse Wedding? In case you haven't heard of this term before, a "metaverse" is an alternate reality, where virtual people and objects interact with each other in real-time. In fact, I've been writing about this topic for years, and last year I wrote an article on how to get started with creating your own metaverse wedding.
The idea of a metaverse wedding is that you create a virtual world where your friends can visit and interact with each other, while they're actually at your wedding or event. It's like having multiple rooms in an apartment building, but instead of one room being used by all of your guests, each room has its own unique purpose and design
In 2020, the wedding space saw a major shift in how couples were planning their big day. Due to the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, many couples had to cancel or postpone their weddings to a later date, while others opted for alternative routes like elopements and micro weddings.
While these drastic changes were necessary in order to ensure the safety of couple's friends and family members, they also helped push the wedding industry into the future - specifically with metaverse weddings. The term "metaverse" was initially coined by Neal Stephenson in his 1992 novel Snow Crash, where he described it as "a virtual world that parallels the real world." Today, it is used more broadly to refer to any online platform that replicates real-life experience via a 3D environment.
If you've played games like Fortnite or watched Netflix's Ready Player One, then you've already had some exposure to "the metaverse." In fact, we're already seeing big players like Facebook and Microsoft make investments in virtual reality technology.
Beyond gaming and entertainment, metaverse weddings could be the next big thing in the wedding space. With travel restrictions still in place due to COVID-19, couples who want an extravagant destination wedding but can't afford it or don't have
A wedding is perhaps the most important day for a couple. With changing times, the dynamics of weddings have been evolving too, with more and more couples preferring unconventional wedding destinations like beaches and foreign locations. Virtual world weddings are the latest trend in this space.
Metaverse marriage is the next big thing in the wedding space. Several people are using virtual platforms to host their marriages. The guests can attend these marriages by wearing 3D avatars. It's a live event that can be attended by people from any part of the world.
