Whether by a cool breeze on a sweltering summer day or a warm current during a frigid winter, an HVAC system keeps any building just the right temperature. This makes them one of the most important mechanisms of daily life. A clean, properly maintained HVAC system is the doorway to comfortable, well-ventilated living.

Importance of a Clean HVAC System

The best-known function of HVAC systems, meaning heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, is their use in maintaining a comfortable room temperature. An HVAC system is typically controlled by a thermostat or thermometer, which allows the user to set the desired temperature. If the system senses a temperature lower or higher than the setting, depending on the mode, it will kick into action.

These systems work by blowing heated or cooled air through ventilation ducts to change the temperature of the air in a room or building. HVAC systems also work to improve air quality by filtering the air before distributing it through the ventilation ducts. It’s important to keep these units clean because they create positive air flow. If an HVAC system isn’t properly maintained, it begins to collect and distribute dust. This leads to unhealthy air quality and can induce allergic reactions or asthma attacks in susceptible individuals.

Regular Maintenance

While a deep clean every six months to a year is necessary to ensure an HVAC system is in proper working order, there are small maintenance tasks that can be performed between these cleanings. Regularly changing the filters on an HVAC unit, as well as cleaning the area around the machine, especially the outdoor portion, will greatly benefit air quality. It will ensure the machine works at a normal level because dirty filters and excess debris force the machines to work harder to filter and regulate air. Keeping as many air vents open as possible will also keep a machine from overworking because having more open air vents allows the room temperature to adjust quicker. A routine check should be done on the machine at least once a month to ensure there are no signs of damage or excessive wear that could lead to serious and expensive repairs.

In-Depth Cleaning

An in-depth cleaning must be conducted by a certified technician to ensure it is done thoroughly. An experienced technician is also able to detect signs of damage and wear that slip past the average occupant. There are many steps to fully clean the air ducts in a building:

  1. They are typically given a cursory vacuum to remove heavy dust and large particles.
  2. After this has been done, an electric brush or whip is inserted into the duct to knock smaller, residual dust off the duct walls.
  3. To ensure dust does not spread into the building, a negative pressure machine or vacuum is placed at one end of the system to pull all air borne particles out of the ducts.
  4. Full package cleans may also include the removal and disassembly of the HVAC unit to clean each part separately. While this procedure tends to cost more, it also increases the efficiency of the HVAC unit and decreases the wear of an overworked machine.

A clean HVAC system improves the air quality and temperature regulation of a building. Hiring a certified HVAC technician to thoroughly clean a system will increase a unit’s efficiency and longevity. It’s also important to perform small maintenance tasks to keep a HVAC unit in top form. When well maintained, an HVAC system will keep a building well-ventilated and comfortable for many years.
