Solar Prices In Australia

The price of your new solar system will depend on the size of its installation. Or to put it another way - how many kiloWatts (kW) of solar panels do you choose to install will affect how much it costs.

Prices in Australia have dropped dramatically since I started SolarQuotes a decade ago (when piddly installation with 1 kW of solar panels costs $ 10,000!) - especially the prices of large systems. You will get a lot of power for the same amount of money.

And in addition to what you may have heard, the 2022 PV program will still be largely funded by an Australian government-funded discount program.

The discount varies based on the number of so-called STCs, which are described in detail on the page I have linked above. With the current price of STCs from the beginning of 2022 you are anticipating savings of approximately $ 432 kW each installed.

Here is an example of how the price works on a standard 6.6kW system, including installation:

(Note: these solar panel prices are very limited and it is assumed that quality components are used in the installation.

Average cost of pre-existing 6,6kW solar system included: $ 9,500Government Discount: $ 2,950Your cost of 6.6kW of solar energy: About $ 6,550Whether the 6.6kW system is the right size or not is a good question. In 2022, the minimum I would recommend is putting it on your roof, you think it would fit. My long thinking is here.

Estimated Costs for Post-Discount ProgramsThe price range in Australia below is very low for the quality of hardware used in the installation. To use a car model (as most people are more familiar with the types of cars than solar models), expect the lowest price to be the "Kia" type and the highest cost to be the "BMW" standard. I'll leave it to you to decide if BMWs are worth more than Kias!

Estimated cost of installing a state-of-the-art solar system with Tier 1 solar panels (fully installed) from January 2022 in Australia:

Recently there has been a major disruption in the supply of solar panels (especially modules made in China), pushing the prices of systems 6.6 kW up to about $ 1,000. Current panel prices fluctuate daily - so don't be surprised if your quotes only work for a few days.

Note that the above uses 370W solar panels, so the final capacity of the solar panel may be higher or lower than the figures mentioned above.

The cost quoted above is based on thousands of data points. For real-time, average prices are paid for by a full system installation of various capabilities in your region, check out the Solar Price Index.

Cost of Microinverter / OptimiserIf you want to install a good quality microinverter or optimizer system, expect to add about 20% of the cost to the above price ranges.

Budget TranslatorsIf you want to go down to a reputable budget inverter (eg Sungrow or Goodwe), you could save about $ 700 on these prices.

Earning MoneyYou could look at those prices and think: "Wow, that's a lot of money you can get!", Even at a discount. I agree. This is why it is important for Australians to understand the payback and cash flow involved in solar panels, so that you can assess whether the investment costs will be a profitable investment for you.

To help with this, I have created a "no BS" payment system calculator that allows you to try different options and see the total cost savings of solar energy and cash flow over the life of your system.

I should also point out that you can buy solar systems at much lower prices than those mentioned above. But I can appreciate the quality of the parts (not just the solar panels) and the installation you will get if the price seems too good to be true.

Whether you finance the installation of your system by saving or adding to your debt, at current interest rates, you may even find your solar energy system paying for itself faster. By that I mean that the savings on your reduced debts may exceed the additional payments or interest lost on your savings. And this depends on a number of factors - so do your research.
