Market Dynamics

The factors projected to drive the market growth are the rising incidence of cardiovascular diseases and advancements in the phonocardiograph device.

The rising incidence of cardiovascular diseases is expected to drive the global phonocardiograph market in the forecast period.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death globally. An estimated 17.9 million people died from CVDs in 2019, representing 32% of all global deaths. Of these deaths, 85% were due to heart attack and stroke. Congenital heart disease is a heart disorder associated with devastating indications resulting in increased morbidity, mortality, decreased quality of life and increased healthcare expenditure. Arterial Septal Defects (ASDs) and Ventricular Septal Defects (VSDs) are the most common types of CHD. can control Congenital heart disease before reaching a serious phase with an early diagnosis. For instance, the phonocardiogram (PCG) or heart sound auscultation is a simple and non-invasive technique that may reveal obvious variations of different CHDs. Diagnosis based on heart sounds is difficult and requires a high level of medical training and skills due to human hearing limitations and the non-stationary nature of PCGs. An automated computer-aided system may boost the diagnostic objectivity and consistency of PCG signals in the detection of CHDs. Heart-sound auscultation is both an art and a science. The science of sounds related to a specific heart problem has been well established. The ability to discern or recognize the sounds being heard is perhaps the art, although time-frequency techniques have been employed to analyze the phonocardiogram.

The advancement in the phonocardiograph device is expected to fuel the global phonocardiograph market growth.

The commonly used mechanism for diagnosing heart disorder is through the analysis of the heart sound. Easy access to digital stethoscopes allows medical staff to record and analyze heart sounds for diagnostic purposes. The phonocardiogram records heart sounds and murmurs in the form of a plot, and the machine by which these sounds are recorded is known as the phonocardiograph. It is one of the non-obtrusive systems, which records heart conditions in audible form. Heart sounds are generated by the opening or closing of the heart valves. Blood flow through the valves’ orifices or into the ventricular chambers also produces heart sounds. Recording of the PCG signal consists of four important heart sound constituents: namely S1, S2, S3, and S4. For example, electrocardiographically (ECG) –synchronized digital subtraction and spectrographic analysis can be used to study heart sounds and murmurs in an entirely new way.

For instance, while older phonocardiograph designs remain useful to study cardiac disorders, the new approach offers two dimensions: the ability to separate the deterministic component of heart sounds from murmurs by digital subtraction and the ability to apply spectrographic analysis to the isolated components. It found that a normal murmur does not vary significantly in either time domain or frequency domain properties across the cardiac cycle. A normal murmur is more or less flat across the cardiac cycle (within the limits of system noise effects and biological variability). By contrast, increases in the murmur signal can be found in regions of the cardiac cycle associated with intracardiac turbulent blood flow resulting from cardiac structural pathology, as in cases of aortic stenosis or patients with a ventricular septal defect. While still, work remains to be done to develop a comprehensive computerized program for routine phonocardiographic analysis, eventual hope is that continuing work in digital phonocardiography will lead to the development of inexpensive non–invasive clinical instrumentation that will be valuable both for initial cardiac diagnosis as well as for perioperative cardiac monitoring.

The disadvantages of phonocardiography are assumed to hamper the market.

The cardiac sounds are non-stationary signals located approximately within the low-frequency range, between 10 and 750 Hz. The analysis of the cardiac sounds, based solely on the human ear, remains insufficient for a reliable diagnosis of cardiac pathologies and for a clinician to obtain all the qualitative and quantitative information about the cardiac activity, especially in the field of time intervals. Information, such as the number of their internal components, the temporal localization of the heart sounds, their frequency content, and the significance of diastolic and systolic murmurs, could all be studied directly on the PCG signal. However, one of the disadvantages of this method is the high sensitivity of maternal movements to different types of noise generated, which requires frequent repositioning of the ultrasound transducers. Due to the potentially harmful effects of ultrasonic radiation on the fetus, this method does not seem suitable for long-term continuous fetal monitoring.

COVID-19 Impact Analysis

The global phonocardiograph market was affected part due to COVID-19. Due to the disruption in manufacturing of medical devices. At the same time, COVID-19 is also expected to fuel market growth. For instance, auscultation of the chest is essential in COVID-19 patients, especially those with poor respiratory conditions such as severe pneumonia and respiratory dysfunction and intensive cases who are intubated and whose breathing is assisted by a ventilator. However, proper auscultation of these patients is difficult when medical workers wear personal protective equipment and when contact with patients is limited. Hence, phonocardiograph is expected to drive market growth in the forecast period to avoid contact during diagnostic procedures.

Segment Analysis

The hospital segment is expected to dominate the global phonocardiograph market.

Despite great advances in imaging technologies for heart diagnosis, clinical evaluation of cardiac defects by auscultation is still a main diagnostic method for discovering heart disease. On experienced hands, this method is effective, reliable, and cheap. phonocardiography (PCG) contains information widely used by physicians to evaluate cardiac functions in patients and detect abnormalities. A hospital setting is assumed to dominate the market because of the availability of physicians who can understand the output easily and the increasing number of patients in hospitals due to the availability of the best technology and medical devices. For instance, the heart of a newborn still develops within the first days or weeks of life. Hence, there are extra sounds called Innocent murmurs. Also, an extra sound, a heart problem that a baby is born with, is called a pathological murmur or congenital heart defect. Heart murmurs are very common and may occur at some time or another in up to 80% of children. It is essential to distinguish between pathological and innocent murmurs.

Geographical Analysis

The North American region is expected to hold the largest market share in the global phonocardiograph market.

The increasing prevalence of chronic heart diseases, demand diagnosis and increasing FDA approvals are expected to fuel this region's market growth.

In the U.S, heart disease is the leading cause of death for women, men, and people of most racial and ethnic groups. Every 36 seconds, one person dies from cardiovascular disease in the United States. About 655,000 Americans die from heart disease each year—that's 1 in every four deaths.

Many companies operating in this region have FDA-approved devices and will drive market growth. For instance, HD Medical, Inc. of Silicon Valley’s flagship product, HD Steth, received FDA approval for all three product classification codes of DQD, DQC, and DPS for Electronic Stethoscope, Phonocardiograph and Electrocardiograph combined into one device.
