First off, what is malt?

Malt is a product made from a grain -such as rye, corn, rye, wheat, and especially barley- that has been soaked, germinated then dried.

The length of processing time, temperature of drying process highly differs from a variety of barley malts of many different flavours and colours. Barley malts usually have lower levels of enzymes and sugars available for fermentation so therefore are more often used as flavouring agents.

The taste of malt is normally described as a combination of flavours because it tastes sweet and nutty, but is also described as tasting similar to toast, caramel, coffee or fruits like raisins.

The reason behind this taste is because of the procedure of the making of malt through different malts - usually Barley. The present enzymes, during the malting process, convert the starch in barley into fermentable sugars like maltose and sucrose. In the step of Mashing ( in beer making) the fermentable sugars in malt are eaten by yeast and turned into alcohol. Yet, how malty a beer tastes can depend on how much sugar the yeast consumes and how much sugar remains after the fermentation process.

There are many questions that people usually have in mind whenever the term malt comes into discussion:
