An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is a professional who provides emergency care to people outside the hospital and on the way to the hospital. The basic job of an EMT is to give first aid care to the patients until the patient reaches the hospital. EMT is not a type of doctor, doctor assistant or a nurse. EMTs work on ambulances to help people on their way to hospital. They can also work with fire departments and other rescue teams during disasters. An EMT provides life-saving care whenever someone needs it.

The basic duties of an EMT after completing are:

  • Respond to 102 calls

  • Reaches to the patient on receiving the call

  • Document about the condition of patient

  • Provides emergency first-aid and life support if needed (oxygen cylinder, etc.)

  • Bring the patient to the hospital

  • Give a detailed report of patient to the medical staff at emergency department.

  • Transport patients from one hospital to another if needed

Various conditions of a patient requiring emergency services can be:

  • High blood pressure and high sugar level;

  • Heart attack;

  • Breathing troubles due to infections like covid-19;

  • Accidents and traumas; or

  • Allergic reactions.

EMT course is a certificate or diploma course of 3 to 6 months duration. Anybody who has passed 12th class in any stream arts, science or commerce can join this course.

An EMT professional is also known as ambulance technician. After completing students can apply for jobs in government hospitals, private hospitals, medical emergency services and even medical colleges.

The annual salary package of emergency medical technicians in India ranges from 2-3 lakh. After getting the experience, an EMT can earn more than 3 lakh too.
