If you want to settle down in Australia, then VETASSSES Skill Assessment is a must for you. It, VETASSES, bears the responsibility of skills assessment for migration.

Here, in this blog, we will tell you about the application process for skills assessment of trade occupations. There are two pathways of application:

  • If you don’t have an Australian qualification or occupational licence
  • If you have an Australian qualification or occupation licence

Here, we will tell you about the application process if you don’t have an Australian qualification or occupation licence. So, read the whole blog to know the whole application process. The application process is divided into four steps. Let’s know each process one by one.

1. The first step is to apply, provide evidence and pay Stage 1 fee:

If you are qualified for a Trade Skills Assessment and feel confident that you have the knowledge and skills given in the FactSheet for your occupation, then you can apply online.

As a part of the application process, you have to give proof of your employment, knowledge and skills. Your proof has to show that you fuflill the minimum employment experience requirements for your nominated occupation:

Licensed Trades: 6 years’ employment experience (without formal training)

Licensed Trades: 4 years’ employment experience (without related formal training)

Non-licensed Trades: 5 years’ employment experience (without formal training)

Non-licensed Trades: 3 years’ employment experience (without related formal training)

Your proof has to show that you have worked in our occupation for a minimum of 12 months within the last 3 years and can be verified.

To know information about the employment experience requirements for a Pathway 1 application, refer to the Pathway 1 Employment Experience Guidelines. Besides that, we advise you to take some help from a VETASSESS skill assessment expert.

Having uploaded all related and verifiable proof, you will be required to pay for the first stage of the assessment. You will need to submit payment directly to Trades Recognition Australia.

2. Documentary proof assessment:

An evaluator will review the proof you give to check you have sufficient employment experience and the skills and knowledge necessary to work in your occupation in Australia.

While reviewing your evidence, the evaluator will do checks including calling your referees to make sure that your proof is genuine. So, you must give the authority the current contact details.

3. Technical interview or practical assessment:

If having given sufficient, appropriate proof, you need to pay the Stage 2 fee and complete a Practical Assessment or/and a Technical Interview. The fee can directly be paid to Trades Recognition Australia.

In a Practical Assessment, you will complete a series of tasks when an assessor watches you.

In a Technical Interview, an evaluator will ask you many questions about the knowledge and skills necessary to work in your occupation.

All assessments will be in English, and no interpreter is allowed.

If applying for a licensed occupation (Plumber, Electrician or Air-Conditioning and Refrigerator Mechanic), then you need to complete both a Practical Assessment and Technical Interview.

For other occupations, you are required to complete a Technical Interview.

4. Get your assessment result:

If having your Trade Skills Assessment successful, you will get:

A Successful Assessment Outcome letter

An Australian Certificate III or IV qualification and Statement of Results (non-licensed occupations only)

An Offshore Technical Skills Record (licensed occupations only).

To know how an OTSR holder can get a full qualification, you need to read the handout for your occupation: Electrician (General) and Electrician (Special Class), Airconditioning mechanic, Refrigerator Mechanic and Plumber.

If having an unsuccessful Trade Skills Assessment, you will get:

An Unsuccessful Assessment Outcome letter

A Statement of Results and Statement of Attainment (only non-licensed occupations)
