Solar Power in Australia
Posted: May 21, 2022
Although solar power can be an excellent source of energy, there are certain factors to consider before you purchase a solar panel. While solar radiation can penetrate clouds, it can still generate electricity. Although the efficiency of solar panels is reduced up to 25% during cloudy days, this doesn't mean that solar power in Australia is not viable for cloudy locations. For example, solar panels can still generate electricity in places such as Seattle, New York, Boston, Milwaukee, and other locations where the weather is generally cloudy.
Despite its high latitude and sunny climate, Australia offers an incredible amount of solar energy potential. During the winter months, most of Australia receives four to six kilowatt-hours of insolation per square meter. This insolation far exceeds the average for Europe, Russia, and most of North America. This means that solar panels can generate nearly 100 percent of a home's energy needs. With a global warming trend in mind, the country has many advantages to solar energy.
The first solar cell was discovered in the 1940s by Russell Shoemaker Ohl. This cracked silicon sample produced a current when exposed to light. Since then, little improvement has been made in solar cell technology, until a young engineering professor named Martin Green made a significant contribution to the field. Born in Brisbane, Green spent time in Canada as a researcher. In 1974, he returned to Australia and set up a research group for PV solar panels.
The growth of photovoltaic systems was rapid between the 1970s and the 1980s. President Jimmy Carter put a solar water heater on the roof of the White House and set a target of 20% solar energy by 2000. Unfortunately, Reagan canceled Carter's goal and dismantled the solar panels. After a short period of falling oil prices, the growth of photovoltaics was moderated for a decade. In this time, solar energy deployment strategies focused on incentives and research facilities in the United States, Japan, and Fraunhofer ISE in Germany.
One of the most significant benefits of solar power is its availability. Unlike fossil fuels, sunlight does not have to be tapped for electricity production. The total amount of solar energy incident on Earth is enough to meet all the planet's energy requirements, and its abundance is virtually limitless. Additionally, unlike fossil fuels, solar power does not produce greenhouse gases or pollution. There is no need to install expensive electrical infrastructure to get your solar energy. A solar panel can provide you with the electricity you need while maintaining the comfort and beauty of your home.
A second solar power system uses mirrors and mirrored dishes to concentrate sunlight on a receiver mounted at the focal point of the dish. This dish assembly follows the path of the sun, tracking its position across the sky and collecting solar energy. The receiver then integrates the mirrored dish into a high-efficiency "external combustion engine." In this design, thin tubes of gas run along the outside of the engine's cylinders. The concentrated sunlight heats the gas in the tubes, which expands inside the cylinders.
