How to Change a Diverter Valve in a Kitchen Faucet
Posted: May 30, 2022
There are two ways to change a diverter valve in a kitchen faucet: you can either disassemble it, or you can replace it with a new one. If the old one has failed, you can change the cartridges by following these steps. First, you need to remove the washers attached to the diverter, which is the next step. Then, you must remove the spout piece to gain access to the diverter assembly.
Replace the faulty valve
If the old valve has broken, it is usually easy to replace. You can purchase a new one from a plumbing supply store or home improvement center. If the diverter is already cracked and broken, you can soak it in a mixture of water and vinegar. This solution will help the new one unclog. Alternatively, you can use a plumber to replace the faulty valve. Once the replacement part is installed, you can reconnect the spout to the faucet.
Use a heatproof grease
Now that you have the necessary tools, you can start changing the diverter valve. It's a circular piece about the size of a nickel, and it faces the sink. To remove the old valve, you need to unscrew the spout and disconnect the hose from the valve body. You can use a heatproof grease or rag to clean the inside of the diverter and the hose. To replace the old diverter valve, you must thread it onto the spout's body.
Install a new spout
After removing the diverter valve, you need to locate the spout and handle. Then, you can pull the diverter out by unscrewing the parts underneath the handle. Once you've found the diverter, screw the old valve into the faucet body and tighten it with the butter knife. Then, you need to install a new spout. If you've already installed the spout, make sure you do not put anything else on it.
If you're confident in your abilities, you can do this work on your own. Simply open the faucet and find the diverter. It's located behind the spout, so it's easy to access it and clean it. Then, loosen the screw holding the handle and the diverter. You can screw the spout into place with the new spout. After you've cleaned the parts of the spout, you can turn on the faucet and check its operation.
Turn off the water supply
To change a Kitchen Faucet diverter valve, you must first turn off the water supply. You can disconnect the water supply by turning the valves in a clockwise direction. Afterwards, you need to loosen the screw on the handle and then twist the new diverter valve onto the hose. To clean the spout, you can scrub it with a wire brush. Then, you can apply heatproof grease and lubricate the new part.
