How does Finasteride affect blood pressure?
Finasteride is sold under the brand name Propecia and Proscar belongs to the 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor group of medications. Finasteride was initially used for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia. In course of time, it was approved for the treatment of hair loss in males. It is used in the treatment of male pattern hair loss in men in which the hair thinning above the temples before proceeding to the crown of the head and resulting in complete baldness. Finasteride has been proved to be better than other medications for hair loss conditions. Apart from addressing hair fall conditions, Finasteride is also used off-label in the treatment of enlarged prostate conditions.
Finasteride works by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone ( DTH); A hormone responsible for hair loss in men. Regular use of Finasteride results in a significant decrease in the DHT hormone levels. This leads to a decrease in the telogen phase ( shedding phase) of hair growth with the promotion of the anagen phase( growth phase) of hair growth.
Now let’s try to understand how Finasteride affects blood pressure and how to use it to your advantage without inviting any side effects. It’s imperative to know for sure.
How does Finasteride affect blood pressure?
Low blood pressure is another side-effect associated with the use of Finasteride. But it is an uncommon side-effect and is associated with 1%-2% of cases using the medication. Acebutolol is an antihypertensive medication by nature. Using it with Finasteride can decrease the antihypertensive effects of Finasteride that may be life-threatening for the patient. Concomitantly use of Finasteride with Aceclofenac ( an analgesic) can increase the risk or severity of hypertension and should be avoided as such.
Apart from blood pressure, Finasteride has also been known to impact metabolism and reduce the body's response to insulin.
But Finasteride has also been known to improve cardiac function in people at risk of heart failure and reduce the mortality rate. It also does not interfere with body levels of cortisol, thyroid hormones, cholesterol, and bone mineral density. In comparison to Terazosin ( a medication used to treat conditions of enlarged prostate and high blood pressure), Finasteride reduces asthenia (abnormal physical weakness or lack of energy):, postural hypotension (a form of low blood pressure occurring on standing up from sitting or lying down) and dizziness episodes.
Anti-androgenic therapy with Finasteride has been associated with attenuated cardiac hypertrophy in patients with heart failure. In a study conducted to analyze the connection between Finasteride use and heart problems in users, significantly reduced left ventricular atrophy was observed in the subjects administered Finasteride during the test period. Left ventricular hypertrophy along with being a precursor of heart failure is even associated with diastolic and systolic heart failure; all of which can be prevented through the use of Finasteride. The study proved that Finasteride had the potential to be used as a potential CAD medication provided more studies were conducted to evaluate its effectiveness.
Finasteride should not be used in people below 18 years of age as its safety has not been proved in that age group. It should not be used in people with hypersensitivity reactions or those allergic to the ingredients of the medications. Allergic reactions can range from hives, and skin rashes to more serious problems like swelling of the tongue and face with breathing difficulties. It should also be avoided in patients with compromised renal functions or used with utmost caution in them.
Now that you know the preventive measures, make sure to ask your doctor for any additional measures to take depending on your health care. Also, make sure to buy the drug from a reputed source.
