How to Shrink a Cap

It is not uncommon to fall in love with a cap, just to find that it is too big and not adjustable. You tried everything you can to bring it down a size but failed. Now hold on a moment before you throw it away and head to a wholesale hat store to buy a new one. If you desperately want to wear the hat, shrinking is worth a try. Here, I will cover the most effective shrinking methods for cotton and polyester, the common materials for baseball caps

Let's start with cotton caps.

Take water in a bowl large enough that there is enough space to fully immerse the cap without overflowing the water. Bring the water to heat until it starts steaming, but is not boiling. Dunk the cap in the water and hold it in place until it’s fully soaked. After a few minutes, you can remove the cap from the vessel and shake off the water. Wear the hat when it cools down and wear it until it dries.

For polyester caps, try the Washing Machine method

Start by placing the hat inside the tub of the washing machine. You can do this in two ways, either with just the hat or along with another laundry. Set the machine to warm wash and let it run for a few minutes. If the cap is still big for you, put it in the dryer at medium heat. If it is still too small, repeat the process one more time, once the hat has properly dried.

That said, there is a slim chance that you could end up with undesirable results. You might end up with a hat that is over-shrunk, faded, or even damaged permanently. The chances are pretty low if you don’t go aggressive with the process, but still, work mentioning it as a word of caution. If it is a special hat that you wish to keep rather than risk damaging it, better to get a new one.
