Atulya Kaushik, a former Google employee, discovered there was a significant divide between India's academic community and business community when working at Instamojo in 2016. He started blogging about career placement preparation because he believed that students needed to learn IT skills to be able to locate relevant jobs.

His blog received 100 lakh views per month in roughly a year. Atulya received a job offer from Flipkart but opted to turn it down and pursue his entrepreneurial endeavors instead. PrepInsta was founded by him and his VIT Vellore classmates Aashay Mishra and Manish Agarwal in 2017 to make the hiring process simple, open to everyone, and inclusive.

The startup's primary goal, according to its creators, is to address the imbalance in job prospects that currently exists in India. The Noida-based firm supports students with skill development, learning to code, interview preparation, and end-to-end placement preparation.

PrepInsta currently operates two offices, one each in Bengaluru and Noida.

How did the idea come to fruition?

The trio learned throughout their engineering days that the college curriculum didn't place a strong emphasis on skill development and that most employers preferred people who knew a variety of technologies and talents.

After graduating in 2016, they began working in Bengaluru for various companies while continuing to share an apartment. Aashay worked for Sapient, Atulya began her career at Google before moving on to Instamojo, and Manish was employed by Accenture.

After Atulya's blog gained popularity among students in 2017, the group finally quit their careers and pursues entrepreneurship. PrepInsta.com was purchased by Atulya in September 2018, and the startup was established on October 8 of the same year.

The portal began offering blogs on topics like competitive coding, placement papers, the hiring process, DSA, Python, Java, and C/C++. Additionally, it offered assessments and paid mock exams on different businesses. Following R&D and the hiring of its first employee, the firm officially launched its operations in April 2019. The team grew to a total of 20 members by the end of 2020, and it made $50,000 in revenue.

Learn through the OTT platform

PrepInsta Prime, a new platform based on the OTT format, was introduced in 2022 by the startup. It provides over 150 courses for developing skills under a single subscription and makes learning materials and methods for working people and college students alike.

The startup experienced a 50% decline in sales during the epidemic in the first 2 months of the shutdown. However, it quickly recovered, much like most edtech companies, and witnessed a 3X increase in sales.

PrepInsta.com underwent a makeover in 2021 and expanded to a 50-person staff. Additionally, it collaborated on talent development with TCS. The leadership team, along with members of the sales, production, marketing, design, and tech departments, make up the startup's team. For upskilling recent college graduates, it has employed former executives from Flipkart, BYJU's, Upgrad, etc.

The OTT approach allows students the freedom to acquire skills while allowing them to access resources and knowledge from all over the world.

To increase the range of work prospects for the aspirant, the course catalog offers programs including upskilling courses, coding classes, placement prep courses, and others. Upskilling courses like AI/ML, cybersecurity, coding in C/C++ and Python, DSA, and competitive coding are all included in the subscription. For brands like Amazon, TCS, Mu Sigma, Capgemini, and others, the site also provides 150+ company-specific micro-courses.

PrepInsta Prime offers students ongoing learning opportunities and skill development, much like how Netflix provides enjoyment. Additionally, the startup has a YouTube channel that has more than 4 lakh subscribers.

The startup made $500,000 in sales in FY22 and expects to make $2 million in the next financial year. All 1.1 million of the platform's registered members are engineering students searching for work.

According to Atulya, as of May 2022, Microsoft had hired more than 1,400 PrepInsta Prime pupils, while Amazon had hired more than 3,200 of them.
