9 RV Storage Tips Every Caravan Owner Should Know
Posted: Jul 26, 2022
You had a lot of fun in the caravanning season but now it’s time to store it safely until you take it out again. Not every RV owner takes it out frequently and if you keep your RV parked for several months at a stretch, it is important for you to learn how to store your caravan properly.
Here are a few tips to help you properly store your caravan:
1. Take care of tyres
Make sure the tyres are inflated to the maximum capacity and the caravan is parked on a level surface. Also, try to rotate the tyres if you do not plan to take out your caravan for several months as sitting on the same patch of tread will damage the tyres.
Don’t use the handbrake in case you do not plan to take out your RV any time soon.
2. Moisture is the enemy
You need water when you are using the RV but when you’re preparing it for long-term storage, you need to make sure there is no water inside.
Everything such as your heater, water system, toilet, water tank and any other place that could have water should be fully drained. Also, all the vents should be uncovered to allow proper circulation.
3. Clean everything
Make sure every surface on the interior as well as exterior is wiped down before you store your RV. Keep your fridge door open as it will allow proper air circulation and that should prevent the growth of mould.
4. Cover it
Invest in a breathable cover to protect it from dirt and dust even if you are storing it indoors. Don’t forget to check all the hatches and windows before covering them.
5. Cover all external vents
An undisturbed caravan is one of the favourite places for rats and other rodents. If you don’t want the shock of chewed-up upholstery and pest droppings everywhere inside your caravan, make sure all the external vents and openings are covered properly with wire mesh.
6. Take care of batteries
Batteries are not going to charge themselves and nobody likes to buy new batteries when they don’t have to. This is why you need to plug in your caravan to make sure batteries are always charged.
7. Clean that awning
Have you added an awning to the caravan? Most families do. Just like you would clean your caravan, inside and outside, you also need to make sure the awning is clean and free of any debris or dust. Remember to use the right cleaning solution that is recommended for the fabric used for the awning.
8. Perform a maintenance check
t’s time to take out that owner’s manual. That manual contains a lot of useful information. It should have a checklist of maintenance tasks every RV owner should be performing. For instance, make sure you take your caravan for servicing at regular intervals as recommended by the manufacturer, especially before you store it for several months.
9. Choose the right storage site
If you want to avoid disappointment, make sure you choose the right site for storing your RV. Make sure it is properly levelled and secured. There are options for external caravan storage and you should look into it if you’re not able to find a safe and secure place for keeping your RV.
Final Thoughts
A caravan is an expensive purchase and you would want to keep it in the best shape possible for the longest period. Most RV owners pay special attention to their RV when they take it out but they often let things slide once the caravan is about to go into storage. The above-mentioned tips should help you keep your caravan safe, secure and in tiptop condition for several years to come.
