Ted Kinning, 94, and Nancy, 93, were married on December 23, 1944, after their wedding was postponed while Ted served in Egpyt during the Second World War.

Seventy years later, and they are still living in Weston Favell. They have three sons, Stewart, Richard and Rob, eight grandchildren and eight, soon to be nine, great grand children.

They are celebrating early on Saturday so that all the family can enjoy a family celebration before Rob goes off to Australia to see Ted and Nancy’s grandson, Paul, who together with his wife Hollie are expecting the ninth great grand-child.

Aged just 20 years, Ted was posted to Egypt in June 1940, seconded to 216 Squadron, Bomber Transport.

Leaving with a full head of hair in 1940, he came home virtually bald to the dismay of his mother and his future wife.

Starting as an air craftsman he later became leading air craftsman and was involved in airfield construction as well as serving in the Air Sea Rescue Service.

Most of his work involved construction and carpentry and the skills he had learnt as a carpenter and joiner apprentice with Glenn & Son in Northampton stood him in good stead.

Nancy first arrived in Northampton as a six-year old from her native Wales where her home had been in an old converted railway carriage.

At that time, she only spoke in the Welsh language and so had to learn her English here in Northampton. Now all these years later, she can’t remember any of her original welsh language.

They both remain in good health for their years and still living in the same home they have occupied for over 60 years. Ten years ago, the Chronicle & Echo featured their diamond anniversary just after Ted had suffered an awful beating in his own back garden from a youth who attacked him. His recovery was remarkable and he hardly looks a year older from his celebration 10 years ago.

Ted has only given up gardening in the last couple of years which always gave him a plentiful supply of fresh vegetables. Nancy still takes regular bus trips into town and will sometimes meet up for coffee with her younger brother and sister, aged 89 and 87.
