The food industry is one of the fastest growing sectors all over the world. The late working hours, nuclear families, modern lifestyle, increasing per capita incomes, globalization, working women, changing eating patterns and greater accessibility to processed and canned food have resulted in this boom.

With the increase in demands and expectations of excellent customer service, the food industry is required to pass and adhere to the strict rules and laws pertaining to the maintenance of hygiene and safety. It extends to not just the service providers but to the manufacturers of the products as well.

The food industry is required to take a number of safety measures to ensure that the food served is of the highest quality. It has to keep the hygiene levels up all the time. The process is detailed and it involves all the steps, right from the production to the packaging of food.

If extreme care while processing is not taken, the food can get contaminated and put the health of the eater at risk. It can happen at any point of the process. The chemicals used at the farms, orchards and the ranches contaminate the edible products. The use of the preservatives or synthetic colors, artificial flavors stand to affect their quality. The delivery of the cooked food to the customers carries with it the risks as well. The food can get contaminated while it is being delivered to the retailers and wholesalers. In this regard, the packaging and storage of the food plays a significant role. Unhygienic packaging, incompletely covered food or unclean and improper storage conditions can infect the food which can play havoc with the health of the consumers. So, adequate thought should be given to the proper maintenance and store keeping of the food items.

The food establishments in the retail food industry should work towards eliminating every possibility to prevent the occurrence of such chances. It should make sure that no low quality ingredients are used in the final preparations. This would prevent the chances of consumption of the unhygienic food.

The persons who are employed in the food industry should be sufficiently trained in handling the work requirements. Their employer should provide them with regular food hygiene training courses. This would serve two benefits. One, the quality and hygiene of the food would be maintained and second, the safety norms and do’s and don’ts would protect the workers against accidents at workplace.

The consumers, on their part, should keep a check on the quality of food that they are being served. They can once in a while ensure the hygiene maintained in the kitchen. They can also ensure safety by checking the packaging or sealing, expiry and best before dates to avoid such accidents.
