Lethwei or Burmese bare-knuckle boxing also known as "The Art of Nine Limbs". It is the national sport of Myanmar and has been around longer than all modern combat sports. With its use of headbutts and lack of traditional gloves, it has earned a reputation as one of the most brutal sports in the world. However, the sport has grown in popularity and become recognized worldwide for its exciting style and unique elements. The first recorded existence of Lethwei dates back to Pyu Empire, which ruled from 2nd-century BCE to mid-11th century. It is known that Lethwei was successfully used along with other martial arts ‘Bando’ and ‘Banshay’ by ancient Myanmar armies in wars with bordering countries.

Lethwei to be one of the most effective and practical martial arts. The only equipment that fighters use for Lethwei is a modified version of boxing gloves. At a junior level, participants use protective gear for the head and the shin. Some of the moves that are unique to Lethwei are, roundhouse kick, spinning elbow strike, knee and punch, knee and elbow strike, back hook kick, and jumping knee and elbow.

Traditional lethwei bouts are either 3, 4 or 5 rounds long. If there has not been a knockout or retirement during these set rounds, then the fight is considered to be a draw regardless of dominance. Round length is typically 3 minutes long with a 2 minute break between each round. The referee has the power to stop the bout if he feels one fighter is significantly beating the other and also if there is a severe injury. Lethwei is extremely dangerous. It would be difficult to find an unarmed martial art that is more dangerous than lethwei.

Dave Leduc has been the Champion of Lethwei and is campaigning to make this into an international sport. He is a Canadian, is arguably the most recognizable Lethwei fighter on the planet. He was the first foreigner to ever win a Lethwei title in Myanmar, and he’s considered a big deal in the sport.

Lethwei is a true martial art that embraces traditional values. Ahead of every fight, most fighters would do the famous Lekkha Moun. This is a way to call out the rival in a respectful way.
