Shorinji Kempo is a Japanese martial arts that combines personal growth, health and spirituality with self-defense techniques. They said it mentioned as a legendary martial art or as an ancient Chinese-temple style. But shorinji kempo lives, and it’s growing. Thousands of Japanese practice it in more than 800 training halls. It’s spread through every major Japanese university and many of the nation’s high schools. Shorinji is a discipline for the training of the body and mind recognized as an education system, which includes its unique philosophy and technique.
Shorinji Kempo History was founded by Kaiso Doshin So in 1947 in Japan. Doshin So returned to Japan in 1946 only to find his nation in a post-World War II state suffering from moral decay and dismal self-esteem. Because of his concern for his country, he began lecturing young people. When he failed, he opened a dojo and began the task of rebuilding the character, morale and backbone of the Japanese people by using his shorinji kempo techniques to attract new students and as a vehicle to teach his message of Zen philosophy. In December 1951, Doshin So founded the Kongo Zen Sohonzan temple in Tadotsu with shorinji kempo as its main teaching.
This martial arts represents the physical, active aspects of Kongo Zen. To Doshin So, it isn’t just another empty-hand fighting art, but a whole way of life. Shorinji kempo combines elements of the styles of jujustu that Doshin So learned from his grandfather, with many techniques and ideas learned from various quan fa masters during his time in China. He took these elements, and systematized them, incorporating ideas and changes from his own experience. The four elements are the Kihon it is the basic fundamentals such as kicks and punches. The Hokei which is practice in pair. Randori is sparring. And Embu, combination of techniques with a partner.
The system relies on an understanding of weak points, balance control, and body mechanics to allow even a smaller or weaker person to overcome a much stronger or larger opponent. Learning defenses against punches and kicks, grabs, and even rolls. It is seen as a ????? modified Japanese version of Shaolin Kung Fu. Truly the Shorinji kempo is a very broad system, but is focused on practical and effective self defence techniques. ??????
