Basic instructions anyone can follow

Instructions in installing a Yale lock

Fitting a Yale lock doesn't have to be taxing. In fact with a few tools and the right kind of knowledge a good D.I.Yer can tackle the task with ease.

Tools and locks required

  • Drill powered.
  • 32mm wooden flat drill bit.
  • 3mm drill bit.
  • Pencil.
  • Hammer and wood chisel.
  • screwdriver both flat end and phillips.
  • bolt croppers.
  • Yale lock barrel (see third photo).
  • Yale nightlatch (see bottom photo).

Instructions

Step 1: Decide were on the door you want to fit the lock.

Should be three quarters of the way up the door.

Step 2: Take apart the Yale nightlatch and remove the seating back plate (middle photo).

Step 3: Position the plate on the door and mark with a pencil were you want the Yale lock barrel to be.

Step 4: Remove the plate and prepare to drill.

Step 5: With a 32mm flat wooden drill bit and a powered drill, drill a hole through the door.

Remember to stop before drilling through the entire door.

Let the drill bit pierce the wood on the external side - this will tell you were to finish off.

Then finish off drilling on the other side. This prevents splintering.

Step 6: Take the Yale lock barrel and rim (see photo)

Fit it on the external side of the door.

Secure it to the Yale nightlatch plate with the 2 securing screws provided.

Step 7: Make sure the Yale lock barrel sits level.

Step 8: With a 3mm drill bit, drill 2 pilot holes to secure the Yale locking plate to the door.

Secure in position using the phillips screwdriver and the screws provided with the nightlatch (second photo).

Looking at the door now, the locking plate should be secured to the internal side of the door. The locking barrel should be sat in its seating rim on the external side of the door.

Fixing the locking barrel in position should be 2 screws fastened through the seating plate of the nightlatch and screwed tightly into the barrel lock.

Step 9: Sticking out of the back end of the barrel lock is the tail end of the cylinder.

The tail of the barrel lock is the part that physically connects the internal and external parts of the locking nightlatch.

With the bolt croppers cut the tail end of the lock to not more than 10mm from the back side of the door (see second photo).

Step 10: Attach the nightlatch to the locking plate with the 2 screws provided with the phillips screwdriver (see top photo).

Ensure that the tail end of the locking cylinder sits correctly into the nightlatch.

Test this by turning the key in the barrel lock this should pull back the nightlatch latch.

Step 11: Test the operation of the lock with the key. It should operate smoothly.

Step 12: Close the door and with a pencil mark were the nightlatch meets the frame.

Step 13: Hold up the keep to the frame and outline its position between the pencil marks.

Step 14: With hammer and chisel remove access wood.

Step 15: Position the keep to the rebated frame and secure into position with the 3 screws provided with the nightlatch.

Step 16: Test the lock for correct operation.

Summary

By following these step by step instructions there is no reason why you can not competently fit a Yale nightlatch to any door in your home.
