Kraft paper has contributed to a sustainable packaging approach that is more in demand.

Kraft paper packaging solutions are gaining popularity in the packaging sector. The material's capabilities continue to expand.

Why?

Let's get to the bottom of what Kraft paper is and how it gained its popularity.

What is Kraft Paper?

Kraft is a German word that means "strong", and Kraft paper is exactly that!

The kraft pulping process makes raw kraft durable, tear-resistant and brown.

Kraft paper board is ideal for making durable wrapping paper, sturdy cardboard, and rigid box. It can also be used to make branded packaging solutions.

Raw Kraft paper's porous surface allows for high-quality printing and finishing, giving it a rustic and premium look.

Kraft Paper's History

Kraft Paper is a packaging product that derives its name from Kraft pulping, which was pioneered in Germany by Carl F. Dahl in the 1880s.

Normally, paper is made from wood. However, Dahl discovered that treating the pulp of cellulose with certain chemicals (sulphates), increased its strength.

Kraft paper was originally used for wrapping, but it's sturdy and durable nature made it popular for packaging solutions such as the brown cardboard box that we all know today.

Kraft vs Regular Paper

You might say that it's just paper. What makes it special?

Simply put, Kraft paper is stronger.

The kraft process, as mentioned above, removes more lignin from kraft wood pulp and leaves more cellulose. This gives paper its tear-resistant and durable properties.

Raw Kraft paper is more porous than regular paper, which makes it less efficient for printing and highly susceptible to special finishing processes like:

  • Embossing/debossing

  • Foil stamping

What is Kraft Paper used in packaging?

Kraft paper is used primarily for corrugated boxes and has recently been very popular for cardboard boxes!

Corrugated boxes are a great option for e-commerce because they protect and ensure products can withstand extreme shipping conditions. Kraft paper is durable.

Businesses often use Kraft paper carton boxes to reach sustainability goals. They clearly show eco-friendly initiatives by using the rustic, raw appearance of brown Kraft paper.

Kraft paper is versatile and can be used to create a variety of packaging options for today's packaging industry.

Different types of Kraft PaperCoated Unbleached Kraft

This is the most basic material.

It is forbidden to 'bleach' or add chemicals beyond those that are patented under the Kraft process.

It is also known as Solid unbleached sulphate (SUS) and contains 80% virgin fibre wood/cellulose pulp.

It is extremely tear-resistant and stiff without being too thick.

It is actually the thinnest of all kraft paper-based packaging substrates.

The surface is coated with a naturally occurring kaolin clay and titanium dioxide to enhance smoothness and ease printing.

Coated Recycled Board

CRB is 100% recycled Kraft paper.

Because it is not made from virgin fibre, its specifications/tolerances are less than that of SBS.

However, this also makes it a low-cost packaging substrate that is ideal for instances where high tear-resistance/strength is not necessary, such as in the case of cereal boxes.

This allows product manufacturers to pass cost savings on to consumers, thereby gaining a competitive edge in the market.

These materials are folded cartons.

Corrugated boxes with more strength can be made stronger by using layers of Kraft paper.

This is known as "fluting".

Kraft Paper's Benefits

It is 100% environmentally-friendly.

It will naturally fall apart within a few days, just like the leaves on a tree.

Although it has no effect on the environment, there is no need to wait so long.

In fact, Kraft paper can actually be recycled to make new packaging.

As the world becomes more aware of the importance of protecting the environment, it is important to be eco-friendly. Having the FSC recycled packaging can increase your product's sales.
