Neck strain is a common problem that is often known as whiplash and it is not considered as a serious injury. Although it usually occurs after an impact or sudden jerk that causes pain and discomfort while moving the head or neck. The sudden stretch in sleep, while playing, etc. can tear the muscles and tendons situated in the neck. In this article, let’s find out some first aid management to palliate pain and discomfort.

Neck strain is mostly seen in professional athletes, as they are constantly involved in physical activities and rigorous exercises. People often get confused between neck strain and neck sprain. Actually, there is not much difference in them; sprains occur when there is a ligament tear. However, the causes, signs and symptoms, and treatment of these neck problems are quite similar.

Causes and Symptoms of Neck Strain –

The cervical spine is the most important part of the vertebral column that is situated in the back of neck, which provides support to the head and spinal cord, and allows mobility and flexibility in neck. At the same time, this part is vulnerable to injuries. Neck strain can occur after being in an awkward position for longer time, or too much of riding or driving. This kind of problem is mostly seen in people who sleep in an uncomfortable position that strains their neck, such as using a pillow that is too high or hard. Other causes associated with neck strain are carrying a heavy briefcase for long time, trauma and accident.

Typically, the symptoms of neck strain are pain and discomfort on slightest movement or while rotating the neck or head. In severe cases, there is neck stiffness with pain in shoulder and back. One may feel that their muscles got knotted or hard with tenderness. If the pain and stiffness last for more than two days, or the discomfort is aggravated by pain in arm(s) with tingling and numbness, then it is advisable to consult the healthcare professional for appropriate management. People with frequent neck pain should follow self-care tip like avoiding strain in order to heal the discomfort.

How to Reduce Neck Pain?

Minor neck pain caused by strain in muscles, tendons and ligaments often heals on its own after one or two days. If the pain fails to subside, employ few self-care remedies that help alleviate pain and stiffness, such as –

  • Apply cold packs – Ice or cold pack application to the affected area will reduce the inflammation to a great extent, which eventually heals the stiffness and pain. One should apply ice packs within 20-minute intervals in initial 24 hours.
  • Warm application – Heat promotes blood flow to a particular area that gives a soothing and calming sensation. Also, nutrient-rich blood is circulated around the area to stimulate the healing process. One can apply hot bag/wrap or take a hot water bath to alleviate any muscle strain, including neck.
  • Medications – One can use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as Ibuprofen, Naproxen, etc. to reduce the inflammation, which ultimately lowers the pain and stiffness. But it is advisable to use over-the-counter drug after consulting the medical professional, so that you can use it appropriately.
  • Gentle massage – A gentle massage will help stimulate the circulation of blood, which in turn heals the pain and discomfort.
  • Use a collar – In severe cases, use a collar or neck-brace to support the heck and head. However, experts do not suggest this for long-term use, as they can weaken the neck muscles.

Fortunately, one can prevent whiplash by performing neck strengthening exercises that help improve the muscle tone. People who sit for long hours at office in a same position should try to take regular intervals to exercise and stretch their neck.
