It is no secret that storms can cause considerable damage to the environment and home. Even the most durable roofs are at risk during a storm. Dealing with the consequences of a damaged roof is not ideal, especially for those who live in high-risk areas.

Despite Mother Nature’s unpredictable nature, your roof does not have to be damaged during a storm. By following these ten roof storm preparation tips, you roof, and you will be prepared for any weather.

1. Check for Missing Shingles

Missing shingles can lead to severe damage in a storm as the wind can get underneath the adjacent shingles and tear them apart. Shingles act as a shield between your roof and the weather.

If you notice any missing spots or damaged shingles, call your local roof company as soon as possible so we can fix or replace the shingles. Fully intact shingles help prevent moisture from damaging your roof’s underlayment and leaking into your home.

Keep on the lookout for buckled or curled shingles, too. Shingles should be flush with one another and create a tight seal.

2. Visual Inspections

When you check your roof for missing and damaged shingles, check for other damages, such as mold, moss, and leaf piles. These can trap moisture, causing your roof to deteriorate.

In addition to flashing around chimneys, dormers, and vent pipes, damaged flashings may allow water into your underlayment.

3. Look for Existing Leaks

When inspecting your roof, look for signs of water damage or leaks, as well as missing or damaged shingles. If your roof has leaked before a storm, it can undermine its integrity. Water causes rot and soft spots underneath.

Leaving these leaks unattended not only puts your roof at risk but can also cause problems with your walls, electrical wiring, and insulation.

4. Clean Gutters

By directing rainwater runoff away from your home, gutters make it more durable. However, if your gutters are blocked with leaves and other debris, the water will overflow into your roof’s soffit and fascia. If left unchecked the overflow will cause moisture damage.

5. Cut and Prune Trees

Despite your roof’s excellent condition and durability, trees can cause significant damage to your roof. Even the most steadfast of trees can be ripped apart by strong winds, sending their branches flailing into your roof. To limit the likelihood of this happening, you should trim or cut down any surrounding trees.

6. Remove or Secure Outside Objects

You certainly do not want your belongings to blow away during a storm, but more importantly, you do not want them to crash into your house and cause damage. If you fail to secure your yard objects, your risk having them fly around when it rains.

Do not forget your vehicle, park it in the garage if you can before the storm hits. Bring any outdoor furniture, plants, fixtures, lawn ornaments, and other similar items inside before the storm arrives.

7. Schedule an Evaluation

In case you are concerned about your roof and your home’s integrity, schedule a professional inspection. Trained professionals know what to look for. They will tell you what you need to fix and how you can protect your home from violent storms.
