We believe Diablo is an amazing game

I believe that the factor that was most important--and I'm convinced that's the reason D2R Items, co-founder and former president of Blizzard] ended up choosing me to fill this role was knowing that Blizzard is a true developer-led company and that the product and the game focus we have [is there], throughout all the leadership levels, and is vital and strong.

So one primary thing that I did was to add Ray Gresko on as the chief development officer. Then, I include Allen Adham to the executive team in order to make the percentage of staff who make games and recently created games much higher. The focus is back on our primary goal and an emphasis on the things that have made Blizzard's games great gaming experience, which is our games. This is sort of the beginning of what we tried to accomplish.

This year, we've looked at each of the projects we've got going on. We've examined various things that we're doing that we felt like we could do better at. We looked at a variety of things that we did that we thought we could do better at. Then we've come up with the debut of Diablo Classic, which has been a fantastic experience for us. And we were at the Diablo League in season two and getting ready to head towards the end of the year with BlizzCon. So, it's been a pleasant ride here.

For those who don't have a clear understanding of what Blizzard is trying to do Now, what would have you to say regarding recent shakeups at the executive-level as well as layoffs and the nature of the direction that is looking to move into?

The thing that is true, has always been the case and will be the case in the coming years is that we are an values-driven company. We make some of our biggest strategic decisions through that lens.

In retrospect, I would say that anytime you have a founding member who has been in charge for over 28 years, I believe that it's normal and reasonable to have some fears, uncertainties and doubts about how we're going to continue to carry on.

What I believe is crucial for people to be aware of is the values that have helped to build this business and also built Blizzard remain the same values. Our focus remains on gameplay above all else. We still focus on delivering high-quality player experiences and positive community spirit for all that we do. It is more vital when looking to the future.

What I think is important for people to be aware of is the core values that helped build this place and built Blizzard are still the same values

You, as a firm, are looking to expand and you do that by accepting new ideas and pursuing new opportunities. How do you balance doing this and retaining the values people believe your company's core identity is? An excellent instance would be Diablo: Immortal. It's an interesting strategy to take on mobile gaming. It's a big business in a variety of countries so it's not a bad idea to look at that market. It's sensible to Diablo to become the product that moves you into [that space] because it's a great fit. However, at the exact same time it is in conflict with the identity people know Blizzard to have as well as what fans love Diablo for, which is evident in the reaction.

The thing I feel we did a poor job of when announcing Diablo: Immortal was contextualizing what we think about the future and what we think of mobile in particular. In addition, I believe that the most important thing that was not mentioned and that we did badly in double-shaming that we are PC-based developers first. Then, we seek out other platforms we believe are awesome that can support games that provide experience that are in line with the type of games and values we wish to put forth into the world. This is an example is that there was a tiny in the backlash we received when we announced the plans to port Diablo to console as well.
