Since centuries, nicotine is considered as a chemical that causes craving for more and more cigarettes, thus making it difficult to quit this deadly habit. However, research points out that it isn’t an addiction that kills you or your near ones. It’s a kind of tar and rat poison that causes health hazards. In reality, nicotine offers a wide range of health benefits and is quite beneficial to functioning of human body. Shocked! Well, let’s learn in detail what good it does to our body?

For beginners, smokers tend to have low risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as compared to non-smokers. Nicotine acts like a neuro-transmitter acetylcholine, absence of which may cause this deadly disease. It is believed that it has power to treat other neurological diseases or it can cure other neurological disorders like Parkinson disease, Tourette’s, ADHD and schizophrenia. Even the patients suffering from depression can use it which is a really useful medication.

Another area where nicotine is quite useful or where it offers positive transformative effects is diabetes. Due to sedentary lifestyle and unusual eating habits, India is rapidly becoming diabetes capital. But this chemical offers solutions for it too. The research shows that it improves the growth of the blood vessels. Diabetic patients often struggle with blood flow and medical students are researching a nicotine based solution to combat this disease.

According to a certain research published in Neurology Today, nicotine offers cognitive benefits too. Cognitive benefits include improved memory, increased attention and psycho motor’s speed. To make it simple, short-term memory loss is improved by the presence of this substance, thus allowing subjects to improve their memory. These findings have led researchers to call for a low dose slow release nicotine patch similar to what is given to smokers to quit this habit. However, a lot of clinical research is required to prove that nicotine addiction has long and lasting benefits while the traditional difficulty with nicotine is the way it is inhaled. The development of all these gels and patches clearly suggest that nicotine will soon be shaking off its negative image and will be used as a potent for good.

Nicotine Patch, the best way to quit smoking further makes us believe in benefits of nicotine. This was intended to help smokers to quit the addiction and also paved a new way of studying about the drug. Suddenly, the scientists started believing in its reliable delivery system- one without the absence of carcinogens-it can be standardized across different studies. Further, the findings further revealed that ulcerative colitis had a few flare up when taking up with nicotine. However, the side effects were there.

In a research performed in Standford, 2000 revealed surprising results about nicotine on blood vessels. Contrary to popular belief, the study showed that it actually improves the growth of the blood vessels. This discovery may pave way for new treatments for diabetes. Many people suffering from severe diabetes might experience poor blood circulation, which can further lead to gangrene and ultimately limb amputation. Scientists from the Scripps research institute found a connection between nornicotine, a chemical seen in tobacco. However, nornicotine is a toxic substance that has various side effects.

In 2006, Duke Scientists disclosed that people suffering from depression when treated with nicotine patches reported reduction of depressive feelings. The results were not shocking because drug is associated with imparting buzz. However, the studies also revealed the link between nicotine and increase in the release of feel good hormone dopamine and serotonin. Lack of these two transmitters causes depression among individuals.

Thus, there are enough of health benefits of nicotine.
