own business

When I first started doing work on architectural company, I thought everyone wanted to commence their own architectural company as early as possible. It turns out not. Most of the people want to work in a great company run by someone else who has prestige and reputation in architecture. But for some people who are real archipreneurs and you know really who you are, and there is nothing so horrifying and suspense generating as starting your own business. They are the other side of the same coin. But in related to general advice for people starting their own business, here are some key lessons I have realized during the past fifteen years of my practice.

1. Design Your Life: Prior to start your own business, you have to assure that starting a business is the perfect thing for you, and find out what type of business you need to be in. The best way to do this is selecting something you are pretty dominant at already design thinking.

Nonetheless, to understand design thinking effectively applied to designing your career, go to How Asian School of Architecture and Designing(ASADI) mold students to be an expert in design thinking, is one of the first things you should do.

  1. Aim to Make a Difference: I believe in order to be successful you have to start a meaningful and worthful, purposeful, prosperous life. As part of sharpening your life you will be thinking a lot about your success. You do not want to get into late middle age and astonish what the hell you did with your life.Life is too short and needs to be lived with dedication and purpose. Having an aim of making money, or winning best design awards, as your life’s intent is a good resistance for an unexpectedly happening life crisis.
  2. Whenever I inform young interns aspirants, they seem skeptical, and usually tell me that they are taking a lot of time figuring out what they have to do in the next 5 years, let alone twenty years. But there is a special reason for making a 20-year plan. A 20-year plan is really the actual length of a well experienced career, and hence, if you are looking to plan a good career, you have to think about it in a 20 year time duration.
  3. Business: Most of the architecture schools do not provide you with a proper knowledge in the business side of architecture practice. Therefore, before you quit your daily job to start your own practice, it is doubtlessly worth taking a continuing end course at your local college(for instance, Asian School of Architecture and Design) or university on how to establish and manage a business. It will gives you ideas about the basics of sales, marketing, finance, human resource and managing your own team.

It is to be noted that, there are no guarantees of success in this world especially in business, and starting a business in the architecture design sector is especially filled with challenges. But your chances of being success will most likely be higher if you look for different ways to arrange, in your own fashion, these above mentioned principles. Above all, try to be a balanced optimist. Good luck and have fun and prosperity in your life.
