Secondary school education is the second stage of formal education after primary school. In many countries, students who have completed their compulsory schooling (usually between ages 12-16) may choose to continue studying at a secondary level.

At this point, students may study subjects such as science, mathematics, social studies, languages, arts, music, physical education, vocational training, and sports. Students may also specialize in certain fields, such as medicine, engineering, law, business administration, teaching, and nursing.

Types of Secondary Schools

There are two types of Secondary schools in Adelaide: public and private.

  • Public schools are funded by government and are free to attend. These Secondary schools are regulated by the federal government. The U.S. Department of Education oversees the enforcement of anti-discrimination laws and monitors student rights under the Individuals with Disabilities Act. The department also provides financial assistance to low-income families who wish to send their children to nonpublic schools.
  • Private schools charge tuition fees and are not necessarily free. Most students attend public schools, although some parents prefer to send their children to private schools.

A secondary school diploma is often referred to as a high school diploma or GED. It is awarded after completing the last year of secondary school. Many people refer to a secondary school degree as a 'high school' degree, even though they do not go to college after high school.

The majority of secondary schools are divided into three sections: academic, technical, and vocational.

  • Academic schools teach students how to read, write, and perform basic math skills. At Avenues College secondary years programs are some of the best, and many students like to enroll in these courses.
  • Technical schools prepare students for careers in trades.
  • Vocational schools focus on preparing students for specific jobs.

Grading of Secondary Schools

Secondary schools are graded according to the quality of their facilities and the educational programs they provide. Schools are ranked using a system called the Carnegie Classification System. Schools receive a letter grade based on their performance. Grades range from A+ to F.

The best kind of secondary education, whether from a public school or a private school, can help students get the kind of academic training that they need after completing their primary education.
