Managing Your Move – When to Start Cleaning

Posted: Oct 31, 2022
How to prepare for a move is an important part of a move, be it across the street or across the nation. There are certain tasks that must be performed to make a move successful, and experienced people have found there is a helpful sequence to accomplishing the preparation of a move. Naturally, each situation will have its individual challenges and considerations, but there are some general tips that should help. Hopefully, you will have plenty of notice that a move will be happening, but even on short notice, the following can be helpful:
- Take time to consider what size home and the number of rooms you will be moving into and compare this with your present size home and number of rooms. Once you have that information, you will be better able to plan and prepare for the move. If you will have less room, then you will know you must downsize your belongings. Even if you still are not sure where you will live and plan to put your belongings temporarily in storage, you will likely have an idea of the size your new home will be.
- If you must downsize or even if you just want to sort through things you really want to take, the next step is to go through closets, garages, storage areas, and any anonymous boxes and containers to see what must go on the move. You may want to have a yard sale, or you can donate your no-longer-needed items to a charity. Many people like to take a move as a time to freshen up and replace worn and outdated furniture and personal items.
- When you think you have a good idea of what you will take on your move, you can explore how you will move your belongings. Comparing professional moving companies and other possibilities, such as a U-Haul truck, will provide you with the most economical way to make your move.
- Start packing your belongings as soon as possible so there won’t be an overpowering amount of packing to do right at the end. Items such as books, knick-knacks, extra linens (you can wrap knick-knacks in the linens to help prevent breakage), and seasonal decorations can be packed early as they aren’t needed until after your move. Stagger your packing with the necessary items being packed last. And be sure to leave out essentials and several changes of clothes in case your belongings are delayed in arriving at their new destination.
- As you pack, for example, books, you can clean the bookcase so it will be ready for use in its new home. Knick knacks can be washed before they are packed, and most items can be cleaned before packing to make unpacking at the new home much easier.
- You may want to begin cleaning the home you are leaving as soon as you can, so again there is not a lot of last-minute work to do. Areas like walls, closets, doors, woodwork, baseboards, and windows can be cleaned before the move-out. Depending on whether you are selling or renting will make a difference in the depth of cleaning you will want to do. Floors and inside cabinets will usually need to be done after the home's contents have been removed.
