For the first time, here is a one-stop-shop for art– where art is not up for sale but to educate. www.artsome.co is a unique initiative that aims to demystify modern contemporary Indian art in its totality and bring it closer to the general audience. It not only promotes artists, but also provides exhaustive information on Indian contemporary art. The new segment on "Mapping the Artist" gives an in-depth insight into the life, works and the very spirit of the artists and their respective works- a huge hit with art lovers.

Art has been an intrinsic part of the Indian chiaroscuro, right from the Harappan civilisation to Indian paintings and sculptures of ancient ages to the abstract contemporary art of today. Modern contemporary Indian art owes a lot to the cultural influences of Indian miniature paintings and artistic sculptures that are an embodiment of India’s socio-political history. Traditional miniature paintings became famous during the time of the Mughal occupation of India– the most popular being the Mughal, Pahari, Deccani and Rajput court styles.

Indian art too, like its contemporaries has undergone various phases. Generally, the art and its allied forms that have found expression after 1985 are termed as Modern Contemporary Indian Art. Artists started experimenting with various colours, forms, textures and materials. Today, Indian art today has not only transcended the barriers of geography, but those of medium as well– from abstract oil paintings on canvas to modern performance videography and sculptural installations.

www.artsome.co features various contemporary Indian artists who have made a name for themselves in unusual art media.

Sudarshan Shetty, in ‘Mapping the Artist’ artist of this month, is making waves with his monumental sculptural installations and art assemblages. Infused with dark humour, he engages with the common man by exhibiting in public spaces rather than a gallery.

Nasreen Mohamedi and Minam Apang are artists who have attained repute for their linear drawings. Nasreen’s minimalist art are executed in graphite and ink, and black and white photography; while Minam’s work shows delicate lines and contours, inspired by folktales from her native land.

Performance videography has been given new dimensions by Hetain Patel, a UK-based Indian artist. Originally starting out with photography, Hetain has included video and live performances to create a new and different art form altogether.

Sexuality has always had its due in Indian art forms. Another contemporary modern artist Hemendranath Mazumdar was a huge influence on Indian cinema. His trademark sexuality paintings depicting sensual women hinting at nudity in semi-transparent or wet saris was later adopted by Indian cinema to portray sensuality.

Raja Ravi Varma, well-known artist from Kerala, is considered a stalwart of modern Indian paintings. He is noted for his interpretations of characters and episodes from Indian mythological stories of Dushyanta and Shakuntala, and Nala and Damayanti, from the Mahabharata.

With comprehensive segments on Artists Watch, Calendar and Events of the Week, www.artsome.co not only maps the artists, but is a comprehensive and simplistic map of contemporary art in the Indian subcontinent.
