Everything You Need to Know About Way to Learn and Play Piano Tabs

Listening to a piano concerto and daydreaming often goes hand in hand. To imagine yourself sitting behind the piano and actually playing it, would be a dream come true. But to learn all about the notes, timing, staff clefs, scales and chords? Well, that just seems impossible. Is it? Using the piano tabs method, all you really need to know is the keys on the piano, where to put your fingers and then do a few exercises to play your song.

Colours & Keys

Piano tabs divide the keys into seven color sections. Each section is an octave which will make it easier to find the various notes for any song. Remember though, the piano is made up of white and black keys. Starting with Middle C, which is the white key before two black keys, keys are named alphabetically C,D,E,F,G,A,B, back to C. Included with these colors and on each tab, are four more instructions: what hand to use, what note to play, where to find it on the keyboard and the proper finger usage. You may also see the symbol ‘#’ which is called a ‘sharp’, which would be next to the note on the black key and the same goes for the ‘b’ which is known as a ‘flat’, and it would be the black key on the left.

For an easy exercise, start with your right hand on Middle C number one finger, play the five notes up and go back down. You can do the same using the left hand. Even this simple exercise will give you more incentive to continue.

Musical Timing

If you have looked at a regular music score, you will see that the notes have multiple shapes, and at the beginning of this piece you will see what tempo it has to be played at. You may see 4/4 or 2/4, but that is not a problem for you. Confused? Don’t worry. The piano tabs method indicates the length or speed of each note by the shape or size of the tab. Fatter tabs mean something is slow, and narrower tabs are used to indicate something should be played more quickly. If there is a rest, then it will simply say ‘rest.’ Recognizing that you no longer need to worry about traditional music instruction, you can easily learn piano on your own, right at home.
