You might have come across the words ‘abstract art’ either in conversations, in the papers or if you have been invited to an abstract painting gallery. Chances are you might know what abstract art is all about. In the case that you do not, here is a simple breakdown on what this frequently used word is all about. It is one of the most difficult types of art to understand. To put it in simple terms, abstract art is art that does not represent or refer to reality and can be anything that is unclear and can be interpreted in one’s own ways.

Shapes and Spaces

When you look at typical paintings like modern landscape paintings or the likes, what we see is a definite set of shapes, colors and patterns. The setting looks familiar and relatable. However, in abstract painting images this is not the case. You might find an indefinite number of colors, shapes and textures which might not have a definite pattern. At the same time, these ragged and deep colored patterns which might be infused with soft yellow and peach curves tend to evoke a certain emotion and feelings in the eye of the observant. For the artist space also plays an important role. As in other forms of painting, you do not have to stick to the two or three dimensional limits. All spatial relations, depth and dimensions are controlled by the abstract expressionism artist.

Composition

This is the biggest lifeline of an abstract painting image. Composition is literally everything for the painting and the artist. When looking at a modern landscape painting or photograph, we sometimes feel that there is something missing or something looks out of balance. It is solely because the composition of the image is out of balance. Sometimes this might be done on purpose to confuse the observer too. However, when composing an abstract expressionism art piece too, it is important to look at the whole canvas as one unit and paint accordingly than rather concentrating on one part of it. In abstract art too you will find a proper balance of elements and designs so that the observer is not left confused but rather enjoys the settling world in which the artist carries him into. Hence, it is not very difficult to understand this form of art.

The next time you are invited to an abstract painting gallery just go and immerse yourself into the artist’s world of dimensions and lines and make your own space there.
