About Gluten-Free Noodles

Most people enjoy good, tasty food. Noodles is a good example. In the West noodles are made from, mainly, wheat and water, whereas noodles in countries such as, say, Japan, Thailand and China tend to be made from different sources, very often with the emphasis on wheat-free products, such as those noodles and pasta that can be bought as brown rice pasta, soba noodles, shirataki noodles, chickpea pasta, quinoa pasta and a few other choices.

The main difference is found in the fact that the pasta and spaghetti we eat in the West, contain wheat, and the noodles and pasta from the East, such as those just mentioned, contain no wheat and are, therefore, gluten-free.

Gluten intolerance is a problem all over the world and generally speaking traced back to the wheat in ingredients and foods. Gluten-free foods and noodles, for example, are rich in nutrients and can be consumed every day as a part of a healthy, balanced diet. Gluten-free foods are a great option for those, obviously, suffering from gluten intolerance, and also celiac disease, which is an immune reaction to gluten-containing foods and ingredients.

In Asian countries, for example, gluten-free noodles are popular as a good source of nutrition which, typically, contains far less carbohydrates than noodles and pasta in the West. Gluten-free noodles in Asian countries are produced from rice, buckwheat, casava, mung beans, sweet potato and oats among options – and not wheat.

Depending on personal choice, taste and preference there are some great examples of foods and meals that are appealing, tasty and wheat- (and therefore gluten-) free. A good example is shirataki noodles, which is made from the fiber extracted from the konjac plant that grows in Japan, Vietnam, China and Indonesia, for example. The shirataki is best served with other ingredients to lend it some taste. What it may be lacking in taste on its own, it makes up for in terms of limited carbs and, therefore, calories.

Although this noodle does not add a lot of calories to your diet, it has certain health benefits such as stabilizing blood sugar and helping to reduce cholesterol. It is best enjoyed with good helpings of other nutritious food such as veggies and protein-rich foods.

Soba noodles are, especially, favored by those individuals and families that enjoy a hearty meal that can be prepared to suit your tastebuds. It is made from buckwheat flour and water (not wheat) and has a lovely, chewy texture. It is also easy to prepare and generally cook in approximately 7 minutes so that the noodles are still al dente, and not overcooked. Soba can be bought in many retail shops such as those that concentrate on Asian cuisine, whether in the supermarket or online.

For those that are fairly new to soba and gluten-free noodles, it is best to follow the cooking instructions on the packet you buy until such time that you feel confident enough to try your own version. Soba is popular not only in the East but is gaining ground in the West too, in countries such as the US and the UK, for example.

Another great source of gluten-free pasta is types that are made by blending different grains such as corn, buckwheat, rice and amaranth – and other options. When it comes to gluten-free noodles and pasta, it is great to know that there are options, the one often tastier than the next. A gluten-free diet is the answer for millions of people world-wide. There are great options out there, such as gluten-free noodles.
