Interior designing vs interior decoration - what’s the difference?
Posted: Nov 13, 2022
There are a lot of people who think that interior designing and interior decorating are the same things. However, they are very different from one another. Here are some key differences between the two to help you understand them better:
DEFINITION:
Interior designing is about creating a space that feels comfortable and inviting. An interior designer plans, researches, coordinates, and manages such projects. Interior design is a multifaceted profession that includes conceptual development, space planning, site inspections, programming, research, communicating with the stakeholders of a project, construction management, and execution of the design.
On the other hand, interior decoration is the art of decorating the inside of a home or office. It can involve anything from choosing paint colors and furniture to hanging pictures and arranging flowers. A good interior decorator will help you create a space that reflects your style and makes you feel comfortable.
PEOPLE THEY WORK WITH:
An interior designer often has to work closely with architects during the early stages of the design process to ensure that the space they designed reflects the requirements of the client. One of the primary responsibilities of an interior designer is to coordinate with contractors as well as with other designers on the project.
The interior decorators do not usually do any of the actual construction work, but they have a lot of creative input regarding how a particular project should look. They are responsible for creating the overall design and decoration of the interior space and they may also help a client choose furniture and color schemes for their home.
SPECIALIZATIONS:
A designer will usually hold a degree in interior design from a university or college and will belong to a professional body. Many designers also opt for further studies so that they can become accredited interior designers. They may be required to go through an internship program to gain hands-on experience in the field.
Interior decorators on the other hand do not have any formal qualifications and work on their own. Therefore, they can offer their services at a much lower cost than professional interior designers.
EXPERIENCE AND MISCELLANEOUS
Interior designers usually have a detailed knowledge of the architecture of a building as well as an understanding of the construction process, whereas interior decorators have only limited knowledge of these subjects. A professional interior designer will have more experience and training in all aspects of interior design when compared to an interior decorator. An interior designer will specialize in either residential or commercial projects and will have a broader knowledge of decorating styles such as modern, Contemporary, traditional, etc. An interior decorator will typically stick to one specific decorating style.
CONCLUSION:
In conclusion, building a house needs a lot of planning, research, and coordination from people in various fields and that is the job of an interior designer. They make the best use of the land to make it a house. And, an interior decorator converts that house into a home with a personalized touch of their client’s preferences.
