Irs approved 2290 providers
Posted: Nov 19, 2022
The IRS 2290 Form is used to report the annual highway use tax (HUT) on vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more. The tax is based on the number of miles the vehicle is driven during the year.
Any person who operates a vehicle with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more on any public highway during the year must file Form 2290 and pay the tax. This includes owners, lessees, and transporters who use such vehicles in their business.
Form 2290 must be filed for each month a taxable vehicle is first used on public highways during the period July 1 through June 30. The tax must be paid within 3 months (75 days) after the month in which the vehicle was first used on public highways. However, if you file Form 2290 and pay the tax by electronic funds transfer (EFT), you have until the last day of the month following the due date to make your payment. For example, if you file Form 2290 for July 1 through June 30, 2019, and pay by EFT, you have until July 31, 2019, to make your payment. If you do not pay by EFT, you must make your payment by check or money order.
You can file your Form 2290 online using an IRS-approved provider like Truckers Assist. You will need your Social Security Number or Employer Identification Number, as well as your vehicle identification number(s), gross vehicle weight(s), and credit card or bank account information for payment. Once you have filed online, you will receive a confirmation that your return has been processed and your Schedule 1 will be available to view and print. Schedule 1 is proof that you have paid your HUT and should be kept with your records.
If you do not file Form 2290 or pay the tax when due, you may be subject to penalties. The penalty for not filing is 4.5% of the total tax due per month, up to five months (22.5%). The penalty for not paying is 0.5% of the tax due per month, for up to five months (2.5%). In addition, interest will accrue on any unpaid tax at a rate of 0.54% per month from the date the return was due until it is paid in full.
