The shaft seals are used whenever and wherever the pumps are used. This is why you can find many mechanical shafts seal manufacturers in the market. The job of the shaft seal is to act as a barrier between the inside of the pump to the atmosphere. When through the shaft of the pump is not sealed completely the chance of leakage is higher, which is a greater challenge to the entire pump industry. As the pump industry has diverse products, the shaft seals are also available in a wide variety. This is why we are able to see many variants of the shaft seals. The seal has 2 parts, the stationary part and the part that keeps rotating. A lubricating film has a rotating part, and this rides on the film which is of 0.00025 millimeter of thickness. If the film is very thick, the pumped medium will start leaking. The friction loss is increased; the contact surface is overheated; the seal failure is what that is resulted. This is why the film has to have to thickness that is very minute.

The performance of the pump is very relevant to the performance of the seal. The seal, however, does not get the due credit until the pump performs. Only when the pump stops performing the seal gets noticed. Wondering how such a part does not get the credit it deserves until it works? It is the same way; the goal keepers are not noticed much until they fail to save a goal. The design, operation and maintenance of the mechanical shaft seal have to be always kept in mind, and hence it is important to know all about them. You can get to know about the rotating part and the stationary part of the seal here.

Rotating part:

  • This part is on the pump shaft, and it rotates in the liquid when the pump is operated.
  • The rubber bellows and the shaft experience a compression, and this fixes the rotation part to the pump.
  • The compression force generates in the transmission rings, and this makes the pump to stand still, and the operation is possible because of the flexibility of the O-ring.

Stationary part:

  • This part is fixed on the pump housing, and the stationary seat and the rubber seal is also present.
  • The pressure difference that happens between these two parts, cause the pump to move.
