2022 Fall Cleaning Tips

Fall is a beautiful season of the year, particularly so in areas of the country where the green leaves of summer turn to reds, yellows, oranges, and browns and are contrasted with the deep greens of the evergreen trees that stay green all year, often with the addition of cone ornaments. Much like spring, fall is a time for thinking about the months ahead. And with the home closed during cold weather and often company coming to share the coming holiday, thoughts turn to cleaning. Many folks like to take some extra time and do a deep cleaning of their home and garage, as well as prepare the yard, deck, and porch for some rough weather ahead. Ideally, if we are honest, it would be nice to have professional cleaners do most of the work for us, but this may not be feasible. Here are some tips to help make fall cleaning easier if you do it yourself.

  • Unless your home is quite small, you will likely need to schedule more than one cleaning session. It is a good idea to canvas your home and, on paper, divide what needs doing into doable parts.
  • A good place to start is to look through things like clothes, shoes, toys, and play equipment to see if there are items you no longer need or want. If the items are in poor condition, they can be thrown away. Otherwise, have a yard sale, or donate good quality items to a charitable thrift store. Some thrift stores will pick up unwanted items, used furniture, and appliances.
  • Once you are ready to begin cleaning, if there are others in the home, including children, have a meeting to decide how to divide up the chores to make getting ready for fall a team effort. Even young children can help with such chores as wiping baseboards, windowsills, and cleaning toys and toy shelves with a damp rag. It helps to make a list of each person’s jobs with a way to check off jobs as they are completed.
  • Then, before you actually start cleaning, you should gather all the supplies and equipment you will need and have them where all can access what they need. Chemicals, of course, need to be out of a child’s reach.
  • Dress comfortably in clothes you don’t mind getting dirt
  • Remove cobwebs and spiderwebs
  • Clean from the top down. Wiping walls and shelves from the top down allows dirt particles to drift down to eventually be wiped away.
  • Take special care to get into corners and behind objects such as furniture, appliances, and bathroom fixtures. You may need to move furniture and appliances to get behind and under.
  • If there are pets, wash their bedding and clean their toys and food bowls.
  • Don’t forget to lightly wipe areas such as the top of door frames, picture frames, doorknobs, light switches, lamps, ceiling lights, ceiling fans, and slatted window coverings.
  • Windows and window treatments, such as curtains and drapes, should be washed. This is often a difficult job but will make a big difference in the overall clean appearance of your home and usually will not need to be done again until spring.
  • Bed linens, including bedspreads, comforters, and quilts, should be removed and washed. In most cases, mattresses should be vacuumed and turned over and or reversed.
  • Closets should have the contents removed and be wiped clean, and the floor vacuumed. Don’t forget to wipe the hanging rods.
  • Bathrooms and kitchens usually are kept clean, but this is the time to clean under the sinks, in drawers, and along moldings, towel holders, and shower curtain rods. You may want to wash the shower curtain as water stains may have built up. Most shower curtains can be machine washed in warm water on a gentle cycle and then hung back up to dry.
  • Floors need to be vacuumed and washed according to their material makeup. It may be that you will want to strip and rewax wood floors.
  • All scatter rugs should be well shaken and, if allowed, washed
  • Carpets should be vacuumed, stains removed, and cleaned. You might want a professional carpet cleaner to handle this job.
  • Once the home interior is finished, you can tackle the garage. Depending on how much clutter has accumulated since the last time you cleaned it, the garage can take a while. The main things to do in a garage are to put clutter back where it belongs, straighten shelves, sweep (sometimes wash) the floor, and, if needed, wipe down large yard equipment.
Wow, fall cleaning is a challenge! When you have finished, reward yourself and all who helped by doing something special such as dinner out and a movie. Be sure to compliment and thank all participants, including children. Even though fall cleaning is a tough job, it is well worth it as you enjoy your home and are ready for holiday visitors.
