Volunteering with Turtle Rehabilitation Projects in Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef Turtle Rehabilitation project presents an opportunity to combine your holidays with meaningful volunteer work. You will get to aid in the conservation of the turtles that fall victim to fishing nets, trawlers, debris and predators. Some of them suffer from serious diseases or Floating Syndrome.

Volunteers have a major impact on the success of work here. Your efforts contribute to the health and welfare of endangered animals and the survival of their habitat.

Where and How

Usually, your mornings begin with a ferry ride to the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre located on an island off Cairns. You will work with sea turtles usually Olive Ridleys and Greens.

You will assist in feeding the rehabilitating turtles and clean out their tanks. Turtles are not well suited for living in an enclosed tank – they tend to develop algae as a result – which our volunteers clean out. Some of the turtles like a gentle back-rub too.

Veterinary Care and Research

You may also get to assist with veterinary care or marine and reef monitoring research. A volunteer may additionally help in rescuing turtles in distress or assist in their relocation and release back into the sea.

Special Projects

The island has an Education Centre that receives visitors every day and volunteers help prepare this area for them.

Some volunteers are offered special projects. These include working in the Intensive Care Unit with sick or injured turtles that need special care. Volunteers assigned to research assistance help with tagging the turtles. Further, they assist in monitoring them with GPS trackers after release.

In addition, you get to lend a hand with efforts to clean the beach of garbage, ghost nets and other debris.

Personal Time

But it is not all work and no play when you volunteer here. Rosters are designed in a way that you get ample free time in the afternoon.

You may enjoy the crystal clear waters around the island. The paddle boarding and kayaking equipment is free for the volunteers.

There is even a trampoline that you can use to dive into the deep waters.

You can swim or a walk on the beach and catch the afternoon ferry back to the mainland. Here, you can go on short trips to catch the local sights and places of interest, sample the local cuisine or go shopping.

Many volunteers also travel extensively before or after their project placements.
