Just like any other Maratha community, the Kunbi Maratha Marriage follows the tradition just like any other Maratha marriage. The religious rituals and festivities that follow with guests coming from all over different places to celebrate the union between two people.

Certain rituals need to be followed in the Hindu Kunbi Matrimony. Without wasting any such time let us take a look at the different rituals and customs that are performed at the wedding.

THE RITUALS

LAGNAACH BEDIOR (matching of the horoscopes)

The first step of every Hindu marriage is the matching of the horoscopes. The matching of the horoscopes of the bride and groom is known as lagnaach bedior.

SAKHAR PUDA (engagement)

Also known as the ring ceremony that is held a few days before the wedding. Along with the exchange of rings between the bride and groom, both families give them jewellery, clothes, and sweets to commence the addition of new members in their respective families.

KELVAN (a puja done to seek blessing from the Hindu deity)

Usually, this ritual is performed a day before the actual wedding. Both families along with the bride and groom gather to give offerings to their Hindu deities and in return, they seek blessings for the couple.

HALAD CHADAVANE (the Haldi ceremony)

This ritual is the most common in any kind of Hindu matrimony. Also known as the ‘Haldi’ ceremony is performed on the day of the wedding. Both families put a paste of turmeric on the face, shoulders, hands, and knees of the bride and groom.

PUNYAVACHAN (blessings from the elders along with the Ganesh puja)

Every Maratha wedding is incomplete without the Ganesh puja. The wedding will start with a Ganesh puja. After the puja, the bride will enter the wedding venue where the parents belonging to the bride’s family will ask all the elders present in the venue to give their blessings to their daughter.

Without blessings from the elders, marriage is considered to be incomplete.

ANTARPAT (the ritual of curtain hanging)

As the bride is about to enter the venue, a curtain is hung in front of the waiting groom. The curtain blocks the view of the bride and is only removed when the bride is sitting exactly opposite the groom.

SANKALP (the exchange of garlands of flowers)

In this ceremony, the bride and groom will put a garland of flowers around each other’s necks. The event signifies that both individuals have accepted each other as their life partners.

KANYADAN (giving away the daughter)

The most important ritual is where the father of the bride gives away his daughter to the hands of the groom along with his blessings.

LAJAHOMA (tying of the mangalsutra)

In this ritual, the father of the bride has to utter some mantras and the groom has to repeat three mantras while the bride will utter the fourth mantra silently.

Then the parents of the bride will tie a turmeric thread on the forehead of the couple. The whole ritual will come to an end after the groom ties the Mangalsutra around the neck of the bride and sprinkle some sindoor on the forehead of the bride.

This is how a Kunbi Maratha marriage unfolds. Similar to that of any other marriage held by the Maratha community.
