Alzheimer’s is a progressive neurological disorder that destroys memory and other important mental functions. Senior loved ones above the age 65 are more prone to this disease. Unfortunately, this disease can’t be completely cured but treatments can help. So, we should educate ourselves about this disease and help our loved ones with Alzheimer's with their needs.

Let us have a close look at the various stages of Alzheimer:-

Preclinical Stage

In this stage, the brain will develop signs of Alzheimer's but without any noticeable symptoms. This stage can last for many years and an MRI scan of the brain is the only way to find out whether your senior loved ones are in this stage of the disease.

Early or Mild Cognitive Impairment Stage

Your senior loved ones can lead a normal life in this stage of Alzheimer's disease. They can work, drive and make decisions but you will notice mild cognitive impairment such as misplacing items, forgetting names, trouble remembering recent events, and facing difficulties with planning and organizing. It has to be kept in mind that these symptoms always do not occur due to Alzheimer’s, but they can be a warning sign.

Middle-stage or Mild Dementia

A doctor can diagnose if your loved one is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease in this stage as forgetfulness becomes more prominent. Your loved ones will become frustrated as they will not be able to recall any recent events, names of people or the right words that they want to use and will get perplexed about dates and their whereabouts. You will also notice some changes in the moods and behavior of your beloved seniors as Alzheimer's progresses. Your senior loved ones may need assistance to perform their daily chores.

Moderate Dementia

In this stage, your senior loved ones will find it extremely hard to remember anything. They will become more confused and may go here and there to search for a familiar environment. Your senior loved ones may forget about their phone number, address or where they attended school or college. They may develop aggressive physical behavior at this stage.

Late Stage or Severe Dementia

Your loved ones will need a round- the clock caregiver to attend to them in this severe stage of dementia. They will lose control over their bladder and will be unable to maintain personal hygiene. They will be unable to hold any meaningful conversation and you will find it difficult to understand what they are saying. Your beloved seniors may be unable to walk or hold up their heads without support.

How in-home caregivers can help

Taking care of Alzheimer’s patients is not an easy task. Your senior loved ones suffering from Alzheimer’s need utmost care and attention. Here’s where a certified in-home Caregiver comes into the picture. You can hire an in-home caregiver from an elder care service provider in Kolkata.

  • The caregiver can assist your loved ones with their basic needs such as going to the washroom, bathing, dressing, eating etc. and help your loved ones with their daily medications and keep a track of their vitals and keep you updated about their health.

  • The in-home caregiver can also accompany your loved ones to important places such as doctor’s clinic’ grocery stores etc and provide company to your beloved seniors

The in- home caregiver will leave no stone unturned to make your loved ones feel comfortable. Besides, you also need to spend some time with your loved ones whenever you have a chance to help them cope up much better with Alzheimer disease.
