Enjoy the time you spend travelling.

As author Miranda Marquit points out, this also applies to whatever "extra" time you could come into. Do something productive with that time instead of playing Candy Crush or browsing Facebook, like answering emails, making a to-do list, or coming up with new ideas.

Let go of the pursuit of unattainable perfection.Entrepreneurs often get stuck on trying to perfect a task while in reality there is no such thing as perfection. Don't waste time trying to catch this mirage; just get the job done as well as you can. It's preferable to finish the job and get it out of the way; if necessary, you can always return to it and make changes or improvements later.

Get some activity at regular intervals.A study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that employees who exercised during work hours were more likely to report feeling motivated to work. Schedule in regular times to exercise, such as walking or going to the gym. Physical activity may be just what's needed to help you regain your composure and concentration.

Think forward rather than react. If you let incoming calls and emails dictate how you spend your day, you'll be terrific at responding to emergencies, but you might not get much else done. Peter Daisyme, my business partner and friend at the free hosting startup Hostt, says, "Time should be allotted to answering emails, but you shouldn't let them dictate how you spend the rest of your day. Make a daily plan of action and try your best to stick to it."

Don't bother you any more with notifications. The appeal of an electronic message, whether it be an email, voicemail, or text message, is too great to be ignored. Turn off alerts while at work and schedule certain times to check email and texts instead. It's all a part of not reacting but rather acting beforehand.

Do your work in 90-minute chunks. Those high performers (athletes, chess players, musicians, etc.) who work in intervals of no more than ninety minutes are more productive than those who work for longer than ninety minutes. In addition, they noted that the most productive subjects rarely put in more than 4.5 hours a day at their jobs. I like the sound of that!

Put together a lovely visual for yourself.Although it may seem counterintuitive, studies have shown that adding plants and other visually appealing features to the workplace can enhance output by as much as 15%. Decorate your work area with photographs, candles, flowers, or anything else that makes you happy. My post 15 Proven Tips to Be Happy at Work has further suggestions for boosting your happiness at work.

Keep distractions to a minimum (to the best of your ability).Even minor interruptions, such as a coworker popping her head into your office to chat, appear to create a shift in work pattern and a commensurate loss in productivity. Setting office hours, closing the door, or working from home on urgent issues are all ways to limit distractions.

Putting in extra time at work or cramming more into your already hectic schedule won't help you become more productive. You should take a deep breath and consider how you might work smarter, not harder.
