Have you all come across the term ‘infographic’ all this time? Well, if not then this blog might help you get some idea about this. Infographics in the simplest of languages mean ‘Information + graphics’ which basically means the use of visuals along with texts to highlight key ideas and information. Infographics have become a very common tool for teaching as they are a very interesting and effective way to learn. The use of infographics in education allows the students to learn better and retain more information. Infographics serve as an important as well as an efficient tool. The widespread use of infographics started around the same time data flooded the web when the internet gained popularity in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. However, the history of infographics goes as far back as cave symbols in 37000 BC. The infographics have various uses in education and can help in creative learning-

  1. Use infographics to make the class interesting - The teachers can use infographics like data analysis charts, pie charts, digital games, etc to make learning a fun process because the students might find the traditional way of teaching a little boring. They can use infographics to teach certain topics or maybe while making the students learn about differences between two things or maybe a comparison between two things is taught, infographics can be used during the time to make things interesting and can help students participate more actively in the class.
  2. Use an infographic to assign the student some assignments - To make an infographic is something that would require creativity and when the students are allowed to make their own infographic not only are their computer skills developed but also their creative thinking skills take a plight and the students get to unleash their hidden talents. Also, this is a creative way to learn the syllabus. In essence, an infographic is a form of visual communication meant to capture attention and enhance comprehension. In this era, "infographic" has become the broadest descriptor of a specific type of visual communication that includes graphics showing data, copy, or both.
  3. Simplifying complex topics - Infographics often prove so effective in educational contexts because they use imagery to highlight, explain, or enhance text-based information. They capture attention, convey information, and encourage data retention from many learners and clients. That may make infographics ideal for teaching the basics of complicated processes or breaking down high-level data for general audiences. As one of the increasingly popular data visualization tools, infographics, and information graphics, enables users to quickly provide an overview of almost any topic and visualize the big picture of a complex idea or content.
  4. Ability to present a lot of information in one interface - Infographics itself comprises a large amount of information to one interface hence it can be defined as a mode of organizing large scales of diverse information systematically composed in a simple and more creative layout. Moreover, it can be difficult to comprehend data without seeing it visually, which is why charts and graphs make so much sense. When you have a lot of numbers or percentages to share, using charts and graphics will help your audience digest information in an easier manner to understand.
  5. Visualization makes information easier to understand - with the use of infographics the students will be able to remember things better because infographics not only provide information but also visual content with images, flow charts etc. Our brain is designed to think in images and as such definitely infographics help a lot to serve the purpose. Those who aren’t good with numbers can use infographics for clearing up their mind by not being too hard on themselves and learning in a more efficient manner.
  6. Infographics inspire creativity - By using infographics in your lessons, you encourage students to think outside of their normal ways of thinking. They are often so used to listening, reading, and writing that adding visual materials encourages them to think visually. Whether it is pie charts, graphs, or images, these visual materials may give students a better grasp on concepts. Have you ever tried handing out worksheets only to find that half of them were drawn on? Handing out practice worksheets or test questions can be boring for some students, but try getting one done by drawing on it, and now all of a sudden it becomes fun. At first glance, infographics look much like other graphic illustrations like cartoons and comics which appeal to young audiences and change the way they look at anything in their life which tend to be complex, in a more creative and innovative approach.

Now that you all have come to know a lot about what infographics are and how they can be an effective tool in the teaching-learning process, hope you will be excited to create many infographics that will be creative and would benefit both teachers and students in the process of education.
