I went into this latest from Noah – The Squid and The Whale, Frances Ha, Marriage Story – Baumbach with quite a bit of enthusiasm, but noticed during the film that I was thinking quite a lot about other things. That enthusiasm quickly gave way to " WTF? What does he want with this?? thoughts, followed by a " Is this a companion piece to Romero's Dawn of the Dead or something? "Despite the wonderful 80-ies clothes (and hairstyles!!) of a rather faded-looking Adam – Paterson, The Last Duel, House of Gucci – Driver, a 'pill popping ' Greta – Lady Bird (director), Jackie – Gerwig and, if you possibly start searching too hard, thematic something like 'do we have to choose an illusion to be able to cope with the banality of existence at all'..?

The storyThe story is set in 1984, where Jack Gladney (Driver) is a professor of 'Hitler studies'. Together with colleagues (including Don Cheadle, André – Outkast (music) – 3000 and Jodie – Queen & Slim – Turner-Smith) he has countless discussions, but they are nothing compared to the cacophony of Woody Allen-esque dialogue in Jack's family. It's possible that my irritation with the constant chattering of family members was fueled by a bad cold that had been dragging on for quite some time, but I didn't understand the point of these more than exhausting family dynamics. Jack also seems to be reasonably happily married to Babette (Gerwig), although their conversations about death - and especially their fear of it - are also indicative of a kind of existential fear that hangs over the entire film. Something that literally becomes concrete when a violent train accident takes place nearby (with a poison train) and our protagonists are suddenly evacuated.If they are allowed to go home more than a week later, nothing seems to be wrong. Except that Jack may have been exposed to the toxic effects of that accident for too long and Babette is trying to swallow her fear of death with a vague and experimental 'medicine'...

White Noise review: Is a Noah Baumbach film disappointing for the first time..? So was the source material 'really' unfilmable...?

So unfilmable, right?The weird thing is, I've always referred to Baumbach as a hipper, less nagging version of Woody Allen. In other words: a fine insight into the human condition, and then accompany this with recognizable but also quite extensive dialogues, so that it is clear quite quickly where the film wants to go thematically. But especially the latter kind of eluded me with White Noise. And know: I usually find it challenging when I have to 'search' for what a filmmaker really wants to say with his or her film, where I sometimes really go too far in my search (so that I make a film sometimes talk 'better' than necessary). But here it turns out the book of Don – Cosmopolis– DeLillo is perhaps rightly "unfilmable", as I read in several places. While the film is set up so 'small' that I don't quite understand that unfilmable. And to make this stream of thoughts even hazier: it seems as if Baumbach has got himself script-technically something that doesn't really work film-technically (for me at least). CastDriver previously starred in Baumbach's Marriage Story, while Gerwig is even married to Baumbach in real life. It is quite obvious that there is little to criticize about their acting (and Baumbach's directing of actors). What caught my eye during the credits was that Jack's children Steffie and Heinrich are played by brother and sister Sam and May Nivola (children of Alessandro Nivola and Emily Mortimer). Of course it has nothing to do with the film itself, but it shows that I was busy with other things than the film…I also always enjoy watching Bill – Passing, The Queen's Gambit (tv), Joker, Vice, Hostiles, 12 Years a Slave – Camp pass by.
