Everything You Need To Know About Sony's Next-Gen PlayStation 5

PlayStation fans are excited. The PlayStation 5 is coming and will be a huge step up from the PS4 Pro and even the current-gen PlayStation 4. But what will it look like? What kind of hardware does it use? How much will it cost? We've got answers to all those questions and more!

It plays PS4 games.

It's a console that plays PS4 games—just like the PS4 does. It can also play games compatible with the PlayStation 5, so if you've got a bunch of PS4 titles in your library, these will also be playable on this new machine.

The one big difference between the two models is that while they both have discs, only one includes an optical drive. So if you want to play older physical copies of games or buy third-party retro releases on disc (like those from Bandai Namco), you'll need to opt for the $399 model with an optical drive. Otherwise, everything else is identical: They both feature 8GB GDDR6 memory and custom AMD chipsets; they use solid state drives for storage; they have HDMI 2.1 ports; and so on."

You can use your PlayStation VR headset with the PS5.

While we don't know what the PS5 will look like, it's likely to be similar in size to the PS4 and will also come with a controller. The controller could even have a touchpad in place of the DualShock 4’s L2/R2 buttons (though this is unconfirmed).

Sony has confirmed that you'll be able to use your PlayStation VR headset with the console – but you'll need to buy a new one. The current model was released in 2016, so it won't be compatible with the new console.

The good news is that Sony has confirmed that all existing games for PSVR will still work on your new headset, including Astro Bot Rescue Mission and Creed: Rise to Glory. And plenty more VR titles are coming this year, such as Blood & Truth from Sony London Studio and Firewall Zero Hour from First Contact Entertainment (a studio made up of ex-Call Of Duty developers).

The console itself is black and has a unique design

The console is black and has a unique design that differs from the PlayStation 4. It's smaller than its predecessor, with a slimmer profile and an exterior reminiscent of Sony's PS4 Slim model. The console also has an upgraded controller, which features a touchpad instead of joysticks.

The PlayStation 5 will also come with a new game pre-installed on it: Death Stranding from Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima. Fans have been waiting for this game since last August when Sony released an incredibly cryptic trailer for it at E3 2019 (the video went viral). It stars Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead), Mads Mikkelsen (Doctor Strange), Troy Baker (Infamous: Second Son), and Lea Seydoux (Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol).

You might need a proprietary cable to charge your controllers.

The new PlayStation 5 Power Delivery Cable is the first product we’ve seen from Sony in a while, and it will be helpful for more than just charging your PS5 controllers.

The Power Delivery Cable is an extension cable for your PS4 Pro controller, allowing you to use it with other USB C devices like laptops or even a USB wall charger. The cable also comes bundled with an AC adaptor to plug into an outlet instead of using your console’s power source.

You may not need this cable if you already have one from a previous generation console—the PS4 Pro and Xbox One S both have their own proprietary chargers, which should work just fine with most laptops on the market today—but if you don't have any extras lying around (or want to charge multiple controllers at once), then this will be handy!

The GPU has 36 CUs at 2.23 GHz each, with 10.28 TFLOPs of power.

The GPU of the PS5 is the first major announcement, and it's a pretty big one. It's got 36 compute units (CU), which is a fancy way of saying it's got 36 separate processing units that can handle graphics tasks. Each CU has its own floating point unit, which means that this chip can do 10.28 teraflops (trillion floating point operations per second). That's more than enough power to handle most games on any platform at 4K resolution. The CPU handles logic and controls the GPU through an internal bus called AXI Interconnect.

The HDD is at 825 GB, with a 5,500 RPM spindle speed.

The PlayStation 5's HDD is a 2.5-inch 825 GB hard drive that spins at 5,500 RPM. This means you'll have around 800 GB of free space to store games and other content for downloading onto your console. It also means that the PS5's HDD has a slower speed than previous models, which has its pros and cons:

  • Pro: You can get more storage capacity in the same amount of space (older models had 1 TB HDDs)

  • Con: Slower speeds mean longer waiting times when loading up new applications or switching between them (on average).

It will be available in two variants, one with an optical drive and one without.

You can choose between a console with an optical drive and one without. The latter will be priced at $399, while the former will cost $499. The PS5 is launching near the holidays, so you'll probably want to start saving money now if you want it in time for Christmas.

The console comes with some standard features: 500GB hard drive space (upgradable), 8GB GDDR6 memory (upgradable), 4K/HDR display support, and more than one teraflop of processing power. It also supports native 90 frames per second gaming at full HD resolution—and can achieve 120 fps when playing games in 4K resolution on top-tier TVs that support high dynamic range standards like HDR10 or Dolby Vision technology.

It can play games with ray tracing and 3D audio integration.

With ray tracing, games get a realistic look. The technique has been used in the film for years but is still relatively new to gaming. Ray tracing is a process that uses light rays (hence the name) to mimic real-world light that reflects on surfaces and casts shadows.

The result is stunning images with more depth and realism; you can see things you couldn't before because they were hidden by other objects or obscured by darkness. For example, if there's a mirror in your way when looking at an object from one angle, with ray tracing enabled, you'll be able to see through it as you would in real life—not just see the other side of it reflected at you as if nothing was there at all!

Sony's new SSD is 825 GB, with a 5,500 RPM spindle speed. It will play PS4 games and stream Netflix and YouTube content to your TV. The system comes bundled with one controller with a USB-C port for charging (no proprietary cables required).

The controller looks different but still does all the same things you're used to in a Dual Shock controller.

The controller looks different but still does all the same things you're used to in a Dual Shock controller. It has two analog sticks, buttons for your L1, R1, and L2/R2 triggers, and face buttons that allow you to access the PlayStation 5's new features.

It also has a headphone jack at the bottom of the controller, so you can plug in your headphones if you want to play privately.

The new PlayStation 5 is out! Here's everything we know about it so far

The new PlayStation 5 was available near the holidays this year, and it can play PS4 games and its own. In addition to your standard controller, you can purchase an optional wireless charging pad for $30.

The PS5 has been confirmed to support Sony's upcoming VR headset, the PlayStation VR2 (PSVR2), which uses proprietary lenses with a broader field of view than what's currently on offer from Oculus or HTC Vive Pro. It also includes built-in eye-tracking technology so developers can create even more immersive experiences for players in next-gen titles.

Conclusion

We're excited to see what Sony has in store for us with the PlayStation 5, but one thing is for sure: it's going to be a good time. If you're looking forward to getting your hands on the new console this holiday season, make sure you visit ME Stores and purchase the PS5 for your amusement.
