Stealth

While other action or combat games, such as Dishonored, may help players achieve the goal, stealth games usually encourage players to engage in the action covertly. Metal Gear Solid established a franchise name in this subcategory.

Survival

Survival action games, a subgenre of action games, have become their own in recent years. Resident Evil was one of the first (though it was a linear game), while more modern survival games like Fortnite take place in-game environments or provide players with resources to craft tools, weapons, or shelter to survive as long as possible.

Rhythm

Rhythm games, such as Dance Dance Revolution and Guitar Hero, are music-based games that challenge players to keep time with the rhythm of a song or soundtrack in the game by pressing a corresponding button on the controller at a specific time to earn points.

Adventure Games

Adventure games are classified based on their gameplay style rather than their story or content. While technology has provided developers with new ways to explore storytelling in the genre, adventure games haven't evolved much from their text-based origins.
