Brakes are the vital safety parts of every vehicles. If your brakes has some problem while working then it is never right to say that you are safe while driving. So such an essential part of the vehicle comes to use whenever you drive the car so it also need to have a proper maintenance and care. But lack of maintenance can lead to deadly issues. In this article you’ll know about brake pedal sticking and how to get rid of the issue. So to get rid of it you must inspect the possible parts that are likely to make such an issue.

Brakes in Mercedes

Brakes not only makes you safe but also makes the vehicle handling better. To slow or stop the car, brakes are used. Brakes help in reaching the destination safely. But do you know how brakes work and what causes brake pedal to stick?

So the brakes are engaged by pressing brake levers or brake pedals provided in vehicles. Whenever you push these pedals, the whole vehicle slows down or comes to stop. It is relaxing when a little force is applied to make the car stop or slop but the feeling become opposite if you have to apply a very hard force to do the same job. It would seem like if you pedal is sticking and you find it hard to move the pedals.

In cars having good brakes, a little force is applied to stop the car. But do you know how can a small force from you can stop a car that has tons of weight? From where do such force comes that makes the job easier for you? The answer is brake booster. A brake booster simply multiplies the force applied by the user. The brake booster is also known as power brakes. So the brake booster is present between the brake pedal and the master cylinder that stores the brake fluid. A brake booster has two chambers and a diaphragm between the chambers, one faces the brake pedal while other toward the master cylinder. So when the driver presses the brake pedal, then the pedal applies pressure to the air in the first chamber. In the other chamber there is lack of air, so it has a low pressure vacuum. Due to more pressure at the air chamber, the diaphragm is pushed along with a push rod attached to it.

This push rod pushes the push rod of the master cylinder. Then the master cylinder releases fluid to the brake calipers which then pushes the brake pads towards the rotor. Due to friction from the brake pads, the rotor is slowed down, leading to slowing of the wheels.

What to inspect if the brake pedal is stuck?

Not only the bake booster, but there are other brake components that cause stiffening of brakes. So here are some of the common causes of the brake problem.

Brake boosters

The brake boosters can get worn at the diaphragm where the low pressure at the vacuum chamber cannot be maintained. So first you have to check if the booster is culprit or not. To check it, you have to press the brake pedal few times while the car is off, then the car is turned on while pressing the pedal. If the brake pedal sinks, then your brake pedal is good. If the pedal is not sinking and getting stiffed then brake boosters are possibly bad.

Faulty vacuum pump

If your can has a hydraulic brake booster then problem can be with the vacuum pump that creates vacuum at the booster. You need to check it.

Stuck calipers

You need to check the brake caliper which receives the fluid and pushes the brake pad towards the rotor. If the calipers become stuck then pressing brake pedals would become harder.

Vacuum hoses are damaged

If the vacuum hoses are damaged, then it cannot create vacuum at the chamber of brake booster. These hoses present near the boosters which can get damaged. Such hoses need to be changed.

Sludge in the brake lines

The brake lines should become free from any obstruction. The brake fluid is more likely to absorb moisture and develop sludge with time. This sludge can make hard to press brakes.

Conclusion

A regular brake inspection can prevent any type of faults while operating brakes. So it needs to have attention on regular basis. Have the brakes inspected at a trusted mechanic.
