The Sun, which is at the center of the solar system, is a nearly perfect sphere of hot plasma, with internal convective motion that generates a magnetic field. It accounts for more than 99% of the total mass of the solar system and is the source of heat and light that sustains life on Earth.
The eight planets in the solar system are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. These planets are divided into two main groups: the rocky, terrestrial planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars) and the gas giants (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune).
The rocky, terrestrial planets are small and dense, with solid surfaces and thin atmospheres. They are closest to the Sun and are made up of rocks and metals. Mercury is the smallest planet and has the shortest year, while Mars is the most similar to Earth in terms of its atmosphere and potential for supporting life.
The gas giants are much larger than the terrestrial planets and have thick atmospheres composed mostly of hydrogen and helium. They are farther from the Sun and are made up mostly of gas and ice. Jupiter is the largest planet and has the most extensive system of moons, while Saturn is known for its prominent ring system.
In addition to the eight planets, the solar system contains five officially recognized dwarf planets: Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris. These are smaller than the terrestrial planets and are made up mostly of rock and ice. Pluto was once considered the ninth planet, but it was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006.
The solar system also contains numerous moons, asteroids, and comets. Moons are natural satellites that orbit around planets and dwarf planets. Asteroids are small, rocky objects that orbit around the Sun, while comets are icy bodies that also orbit around the Sun and develop a coma or a tail when they come close to it.
The study of the solar system is known as astronomy, and it has provided important insights into the formation and evolution of the universe.
